국문 초록

이 연구는 대안학교 출신 탈북 대학생들이 대학이라는 새로운 문화를 접촉한 이후 경험하는 문화적응의 과정과 전략을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 대안학교 출신의 탈북 대학생 4명과 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하고 연구를 수행하였다. 연구는 문화적응(acculturation)이 원문화와 주류문화에 대한 태도 및 정체성으로 설명된다는 점에 착안하여 탈북 대학생들이 참여하는 집단을 각 집단의 주된 구성원과 문화에 따라 ‘탈북 커뮤니티’와 ‘남한사회 커뮤니티’로 구분하여 커뮤니티에 대한 인식과 태도와 함께 문화적응 과정을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 대안학교 출신의 탈북 대학생들은 대학진학 후 초기에는 주로 ‘동화’와 같은 일방향적인 전략을 사용하였으나 점차 두 문화집단 모두 고려하는 전략을 사용하였다. 한편, 이들은‘정체성에 대한 탐색’, ‘입국 전 경험의 의미 찾기’, ‘자기성찰과 현실수용’이라는 적응 전략을 사용하고 있었다. 이러한 연구의 결과는 분리형태의 대안학교를 졸업한 탈북학생이 대학 진학 이후 적응상의 어려움을 경험하지만 두 커뮤니티와의 상호작용 속에서 적응해 가는 적극적인 행위자라는 점과 이들이 적응 전략을 모색하게 되는 구체적인 맥락과 상황을 함께 살펴보았다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 이론적 논의 및 시사점을 제공하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to explore cultural adaptation of college students defecting from North Korea, by exploring their diverse community experiences. To this end, the study was designed to adopt the methodology of qualitative case study and the data were collected via interviews with four college students who graduated from alternative schools. The participants have joined in various communities such as alternative school reunion, North Korean university students group in the university they went to, small groups in church, student council and others. The communities they joined are divided into two groups, by the composition of main members; North Korean community with members of North Korean migrants and South Korean Community, mostly consisting of South Koreans. The interview analysis results showed the participants considered North Korean community as a group for emotional support, information-sharing and a change to meet diverse individuals. Meanwhile, they perceived South Korean community as a group for cultural adjustment, a group to seek opportunity and a group where they felt a sense of superiority and prejudice of others. These students were able to get culturally adjusted, having different perceptions and attitude between the two types of groups. Based on the findings, this study is offering a chance of theoretical discussion and implications on education to help these college students’s adaptation.
