국문 초록

지역지리(regional geography)는 지역의 특성을 파악하고자 하는 지리학의 오랜 전통으로 지역을 구성하고 있는 자연ㆍ인문현상이나 그들 사이의 관계를 함께 관심 갖는 분야이다. 본고에서는 현재 수행되고 있는 지역지리의 구성을 비판적으로 고민하면서 지역의 차이나는 모습 즉 지역민이나 외부인 들에게 해당 지역의 생김새를 어느 정도 그려볼 수 있게 하는 실제적인 지역 지리의 구성방안을 제안해 보고자 하였다. 먼저 지역이 경험해 온 역사적 변천에 대한 관심인데, 이는 현재적 시점 중심의 지역지리 구성에 대해 시간 요소를 접목시키는 역사지리적(historical geography) 접근을 말한다. 다음으로 지역을 구성하고 있는 특징적인 경관이나 장소에 대한 관심인데, 지역을 구성하고 있는 수많은 파편 중에서 지역의 차이나는 모양새 소위 지역정체성 (지역성) 구성을 위한 ‘역사문화 경관이나 장소’를 중심으로 하는 지역지리 구성이다. 여기서 ‘역사문화 경관 및 장소’는 역사적 사건이 관련되어 있거나 지역민에게 의미 있는 경험대상으로 유지돼 온 물질적, 언표적 공간텍스트로서 지역을 구성하고 있는 파편 조각들 즉 수많은 시간 지층을 머금고 있는 역사지리적 접근대상을 말하는 것이다. 이러한 두 가지 관심과 관련해 구성되는 지역지리를 본고에서는 지역역사 지리(regional historical geography)로 규정하고, 충청남도 부여군을 사례로 지역의 전통적 모습이나 주요한 변화를 확인할 수 있는 여러 시간단면 상의 지리적 재현물 즉 ‘역사문화 경관이나 장소’에 대한 역사지리적 접근을 시도하였다. 사례 지역인 충남 부여군은 흔히 ‘백제의 고도(古都)’, ‘백제문화 권’으로 알려져 있고 지역민이나 지자체에서도 백제 또는 백제시대를 빼놓고 부여를 생각하는 것은 거의 불가능할 정도이다. 이러한 현재적 입장에서의 부여 지역의 장소 의미 구성은 부여군 소재 대표적인 역사문화 경관으로서 국가지정문화재를 비롯한 국가등록문화재, 도지정문화재, 도문화재자료, 향토유적 등의 시기별, 지역별 분포 상황을 통해 충분히 의미가 있음을 확인할수 있었다. 그렇지만 현재의 부여군은 ‘백제의 고도’와 직접적으로 관련된 현재의 부여읍 일대를 포함한 부여현(扶餘縣)만이 아닌 석성현(石城縣), 홍산현 (鴻山縣), 임천군(林川郡) 등 조선시대 네 개 군ㆍ현이 함께 유지되어 온 지역이다. 이에 ‘백제의 고도’로서 부여의 장소정체성과 관련된 역사문화 경관 외에 조선시대 부여 지역 각 군ㆍ현의 행정중심지였던 읍치(邑治)에 주목하여 부여 지역의 전통 중심지 및 공간구성, 길 체계 그리고 근대 이후 국토공 간의 재편 과정에서 경험한 지역의 역사적 변화과정을 함께 탐색해 보았다. 특히 전통도시 읍치가 갖는 역사적 장소성과 관련해 읍치 진산과 주산에 대해서도 주목하였다.

영문 초록

Regional geography is a long tradition of modern geography that has tried to understand the characteristics of a region. It is an approach that has studied both natural and human phenomena of the region and relationships between them. In this paper, while critically considering the current regional geography, I tried to propose an different approach of constructing regional geography which is able to draw a picture of the regional difference, regional approximate appearance to the regional people or outsiders. The first is the interest in the historical transition that the region has experienced, which refers to a historical geographical approach that incorporates the time factor into the geographical composition of the present time. The next is the interest in the characteristic landscape or place that constitutes the region. They may be a historical and cultural landscape and place that could construct the regional identities and localities. Here, historical and cultural landscapes and places are spatial fragments that constitute the region as material and linguistic texts that have been associated with historical events or have been meaningful experiences for regional people. Such landscapes and places are the meaningful objects of historical geography for constructing regional geography. In this paper, I d like to define regional historical geography as an approach with regard to these problematic considerations. And then I tried to construct the regional historical geography of Buyeo County, Chungnam Province through the geographical representations, historical and cultural landscapes and places , on the cross-section of time which can identify the traditional appearances and major historical changes of the region. Buyeo County is often known as the ancient capital of Baekje or Baekje cultural area . It is almost impossible for regional people and local governments to think about Buyeo County without Baekje Kingdom or Baekje era. In this present position, it could be possible enough to construct the regional identity of Buyeo County as the ancient capital of Baekje or Baekje cultural area through some representative historical and cultural landscapes in Buyeo County such as the national cultural properties and the regional remains, etc. However, we should not forget that the current Buyeo County includes the current Buyeo-eup area directly related to Baekje, but also other prefectures such as Seokseong-hyeon, Hongsan-hyeon, Imcheon-gun in the Joseon Dynasty. In other words, it is an area where four counties and prefectures have been kept together for a long time. So, in addition to the historical and cultural landscapes related to the regional identity of Baekje as the ancient capital of Baekje , I had to focus on Eupchi which was the administrative center and the regional transportation node of each county and prefecture in the Joseon Dynasty. I think that Eupchi could be a clue and passage to explore the traditional appearances and the historical process of region. It shows the historical changes of the region experienced in the reorganization process of the traditional center and space composition, the road system, etc. In particular, I have also paid attention to Jusan and Jusan of fengshui, the Korean traditional geography, in connection with the historical place meaning of the Korean traditional city Eupchi.
