국문 초록

기존 연구에서는 ``占``이라는 행위와 圓光의 치병활동 등을 근거로 점찰법회의 성격을 밀교로 이해해 왔다. 그러나 점찰법회는 시기에 따라 그 내용이 변화하였고, 밀교 또한 단순히 주술이나 치병 등의 神異한 행적에 국한된 것이 아니라 成佛을 위한 수행과 의례 등이 보다 체계화된 불교이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 점찰법회의 변화에 밀교가 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지를 살펴보았다. 점찰법회는 과거의 業을 관찰하고 참회, 受戒한 후 다시 果報를 관찰하는 순서로 진행되는데, 처음에는 과거의 업을 관찰하는 데 그쳤지만, 통일 이후 과보를 관찰하는 방식으로 변화하면서 전체의 의식을 갖추게 되었다. 이 변화 시기는 곧 밀교가 유행한 시기와 일치하며, 밀교의 의식·의례의 강조가 점찰법회의 변화에 영향을 끼쳤다고 생각된다. 특히 참회법인 점찰예참은 수행법으로 독자적인 의례를 갖추고 있어, 밀교적 세계를 구현한 오대산신앙 속에 포함되기도 했다. 眞表도 자신의 몸을 버리는 참회 방식으로 수행을 하고, 189개의 간자를 사용하는 새로운 작단법을 사용하면서 신라 점찰법회를 완성하였다. 점찰법회는 ``占``이라는 형식보다 수행을 위한 참회와 체계화된 의식·의례, 독자적인 작단법의 사용이라는 점에서 밀교와 긴밀한 관련성이 있다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Previous studies have described Jeomchal Buddhist Mass as Esoteric Buddhism due to its practice of divination (占) and Wonkwang (圓光)`s practice of healing. However, Jeomchal Buddhist Mass changed its religious contents with the passage of time. For its part, Esoteric Buddhism was not limited to such eccentric practices as incantation and healing. It was indeed systematic Buddhism, as it had cultivation and rites for becoming a Buddha. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of Esoteric Buddhism on the change in Jeomchal Buddhist Mass. Jeomchal Buddhist Mass encouraged cultivation in the following manners and order: observing past wrongdoings (業), repentance, ordination (受戒), and observing karmic results. In the beginning, it had focused just on past wrongdoings without observing the karmic results. However, it later introduced the step of observing karmic results after Silla`s unification, thereby completing the entire ritual process. The era when such change happened corresponds to the height of Esoteric Buddhism. Thus, it appears that Esoteric Buddhism`s emphasis on rites had an impact on the change that took place in Jeomchal Buddhist Mass. In particular, Jeomchal Buddhist Mass had its own cultivation rite, Jeomchal Worship, which is the repentance ceremony. This ceremony was adopted by the Odaesan Faith, Silla`s unique religion that strived to realize the vision of the world sought by Esoteric Buddhism. Jinpyo (眞表) fully established Jeomchal Buddhist Mass in Silla by pursuing the cultivation method of sacrificing his body and by using a new platform-making method that utilized 189 sticks. Jeomchal Buddhist Mass had close connections with Esoteric Buddhism in terms of repentance for cultivation, systematic rites, and a unique platform-making method rather than the practice of divination.
