惠寰‧無名子‧沆瀣의 비평적 글쓰기를 통해 본 ‘人-文’의 경계와 글쓰기의 형이상학

국문 초록

18·19세기 조선에서 (비)자발적으로 환로에 나가지 않은 채, 평생토록 글쓰기에 전념해 온 惠환 李用休(1708~1782), 無名子 尹기(1741~1826), 沆瀣 洪吉周(1786~1841)의 비평적 글쓰기를 통해 ``쓴다``는 행위 자체에 관한 사회적·역사적·존재론적인 의미를 탐색했다. 이용휴는 벼슬하지 않았지만 지역을 중심으로 한 사회적 관계를 형성했으며, 지인에게 글을 써주는 관계론적 맥락 속에서 자신의 경세관을 실천하는 사회적 통로를 마련해 왔다. 윤기는 평생의 거의 대부분을 벼슬하지 않은 문사로 지내면서 글쓰기를 지속했고, 이용휴와 달리 지적인 소통 집단을 형성하지 않았지만, 오직 글쓰기를 통해 사회 제도와 문화·세태·역사를 바라보는 비평적 관점을 구성하고 표현하는 ``자기의 사회화``를 실천했다. 홍길주는 ``문장이란 무엇인가``, ``쓴다는 것``은 무엇이며 ``읽는다는 것은 무엇인가``라는 질문에 관해 비평적 글쓰기를 함으로써 문사로서의 자기 정체성을 형성하고 확인해갔다. 이들의 사회문화적 위상이나 문학사적 평가는 상이하지만 글쓰기라는 지극히 개인적인 행위를 통해 사회·역사와 소통하는 장소를 마련해 왔으며 비평적 글쓰기를 통해 자기를 사회화하고 역사화하는 기회를 만들었다는 공통분모를 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 글쓰기의 존재론으로 본다면, 이들이 수행한 글쓰기 자체에 대한 사고와 성찰을 일종의 글쓰기의 형이상학으로 명명할 수 있을 것이다. 조선시대 문사들의 ``文``에 대한 인식은 ``人-文``의 分離不可能性에 근거해 있었다. ``人(주체로서의 인간)``과 ``天/世(대상으로서의 우주/세계)``, 그리고 ``文(인간과 우주/세계의 매개로서의 글)``은 결코 분리될 수 없다는 인식 속에서, ``人-文-天``의 동일성을 확인하는 글쓰기는 ``공감의 비평``으로, 그것의 불일치를 발견하는 글쓰기는 ``비판적 비평``으로 발현되었다. 이들의 비평적 글쓰기는 쓰기 주체의 판단이나 주장을 사회에 전파하려는 욕망이나 의지에서 출발하는 것이 아니라 비평의 화살을 글을 쓰는 자기 자신을 향해 겨눌 때만이 확보된다는 자기 성찰성을 담보하고 있었다. 이는 대상에 대한 비평에 앞서 작가 자신의 자기 비평과 성찰이 수행되어야 한다는 점에서 ``비평의 역설``적 지점을 형성한다. 이들이 보여준 ``비평적 글쓰기``에 관한 ``쓰기의 형이상학``은 비평의 준거가 무엇인가를 끊임없이 되물으며, 타자를 향해 겨눈 비판의 준거를 글을 쓰는 자기 자신에게 되돌리는 ``재귀적 치환``의 행위 속에서만이 생성되며, 동시에 작가가 자신을 객관화할 수 있는 ``비평적 거리``를 설정할 때만이 그 정당성을 확보할 수 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzed critical essays written by three representative writers of the Joseon period who did not work as (in)voluntary government officers: Lee, Yong-Hyu (李用休); Yoon, Ki (尹기); and Hong, Gil-Ju (洪吉周), in order to research the social, historical and ontological meanings of writing itself. Lee never worked as a government officer; however, he created with his neighbors a social community in the area where he lived and got in touch with them through giving and taking some writings. Yoon neither worked as a government officer nor created an intellectual community, but he continuously wrote critical essays about the contemporary Joseon society, system, culture, and history. Through these actions, he allowed his descendants to know his identity, which he worked to confirm through self-socialization. Hong constantly shed light on the meaning of writing by addressing such questions as: what is writing itself? What is the meaning of reading? What is literature? He searched the answers to these questions and created a literary identity during his lifetime. Writing as a behavior is very individual; however, by writing itself, these authors created some space to communicate with the contemporary society and history. Writing also gave them an opportunity to historicize themselves. These intellectuals` contemplation about literature during the Joseon period was based on the concept of regarding literature in the same light as the writer. The intellectual writers shared some ideas on literature: that the writer (a human being as a subject), world (cosmos as an object), and literature (writings as media connecting the human being and cosmos) were inseparable. In this context, if a coincidence were found within this triangle, they wrote some critical essays as a criticism of sympathy. In opposite cases, they assumed a critical attitude toward such tripodic interrelationships. They premised such ideas on the principle that they should reflect upon their own self-examination before criticizing society or culture. Such a process created a paradox of criticism and work as critical criteria.
