한말 서울 東幕 객주의 미곡 거래와 荷主들 ＊ - ‘東泰元’의 장부를 중심으로 -

국문 초록

미곡 객주란 하주인 미곡의 생산자와 수집상들로부터 그 판매를 위탁받아 이를 인수, 보관하고 있다가 적당한 시기에 그것들을 팔아주고 그에 대한 수수료를 받은 상인이다. 그래서 이들은 미곡시장 동향에 정통하였고 거기서 얻은 정보와 자금을 배경으로 미곡의 생산, 운송, 보관, 정미, 수출, 금융 업에도 진출하여 그중 상당수가 한국 근현대의 전형적인 부르주아 계급으로 성장하여 갔다. 이에 그간 학계는 근대 화의 내적 경로와 부르주아 계급 성장의 상업적, 도시적 기원을 밝힌다는 문제의식 아래 객주들의 경제 활동과 정치, 사회, 문화적 지향을 다룬 여러 연구를 축적하였다. 본고는 이런 작업의 연장선 위에서 대한제국 시기 서울 한강변 동막에서 ‘東泰元’이라는 객주업 체를 운영한 김씨가의 ≷선복≸(1902∼ 1908)과 ≷회계기≸(1901∼1904)라는 장부를 이용하여 그들에게 미곡 판매를 위탁하였던 하주는 누구이고 위탁 규모와 빈도는 어느 정도였으며, 미곡의 보관과 매각 대금 정산은 어떻게 이루어 졌고 그 과정에서 거래비용, 특히 무명 잡세가 얼마나 발생하였으며, 객주와 하주의 관계는 어떠했던가 등을 실증적 으로 검토한 것이다.

영문 초록

Grain brokers (米穀 客主) were merchants to whom the sale of rice were consigned by shippers, producers, and dealers. The brokers received, stored, and sold the grain at the appropriate opportunity, for which they received a fee. Consequently, the brokers knew the trends of the grain market better than anyone else. Utilizing both information and capital, they expanded their business to the areas of grain production, transport, storage, polishing, export, and finance, and many of them developed into the stereotypical modern Korean bourgeoisie. Previous authors have contributed various studies detailing the economic activities and political, social, and cultural aims of brokers with the purpose of uncovering the internal path of modernization and the commercial, urban origins of the bourgeoisie. In furthering those studies, this paper analyzes the account books “Sŏnbok” (船福 1902~1908) and “Hoegyegi” (會計記 1901~1904) of the Kim family that managed Tongt’aewŏn (東泰元), a broker business that operated along the banks of the Han River in Seoul during the period of the Taehan Empire. This paper closely examines the identity of the shippers who entrusted Tongt’aewŏn with rice sales; the scope and frequency of consignment; how rice shipments were stored and payment balances were settled; the expenses arising in the transaction process, especially the amount of miscellaneous taxes; and the relationship between the brokers and shippers.
