국문 초록

이 글은 1950~60년대 ‘반공영화’ 논쟁을 통해 지난 수십년간 한국사회의 지배이데올로기로서 기능하였던 반공 주의를 감성/감정의 차원에서 바라보고 그것의 사회적 확산, 강화 기제였던 ‘반공영화’가 어떻게 반공주의를 배반 하는 딜레마에 빠지면서 반공주의의 한계를 드러내고 있는지를 살펴본 글이다. 한국사회에서 반공주의는 단일한 논리로 구성된 이성체계나 사상이 라기보다는 상이하고 모순적인 논리와 감성이 혼재되어 시기별로 다른 양상 으로 표출되는 감성/감정의 복합체이 다. 반공주의의 확산, 강화를 위한 각급 학교의 반공교육은 공산주의와 북한에 대해 증오심과 적대감 등 부정적 감정을 주조하는 감정교육의 형태로 진행되었으며, 반공교육의 위기가 거론되면서 그 대안으로 제시된 ‘반공영 화’ 역시 반공주의를 감성적 차원에서 선전하는 프로파간다이자 문화적 기획 물이었다. 그러나 이러한 감성기획으 로서의 ‘반공영화’는 그것이 범주적으로 구성될 때부터 논쟁적이었으며, 그것은 ‘반공영화’가 휴머니즘, 오락성, 그리고 민족 정서 등과 가지는 관계의 모호함과 양립불가능성에 기인하는 것이었다. 대중들과의 정서적 교감과 흥행을 목적으로 하는 대중상업영화의 속성은 필연적으로 반공주의와의 불화를 가져온다. 반공주의에 가장 적합한 프로파간다의 도구로서 관심과 기대를 모은 ‘반공영화’가 자신을 잉태한 반공 주의를 배반할 수밖에 없는 딜레마에 빠지게 되는 것은 이 때문이다. 이때 영화는 국가의 지배이데올로기를 구현 함과 동시에 그에 반하는 대중적 감수 성을 담지하는 공간, 곧 저항적 공공적 상상력이 싹틀 수 있는 가능성의 장소 이다. 이렇게 보았을 때 ‘반공영화’라는 반공주의의 감성기획은 언제나 실패의 가능성이 내재한 불안한 프로젝 트였다. 1960년대 반공주의가 대중의 심성에 완전히 밀착되거나 내면화되지 못했던 이유는 이러한 불안 자체가 온전히 반공주의의 본질을 구성하고 있었기 때문이었다. 그것은 엄밀히 말해 공산주의에 대한 불안이 아니라 반공 주의라는 감성기획이 성공하지 못하는 것에 대한 불안이었다.

영문 초록

This thesis examines the dilemma of “anticommunist films” by exposing their limitations and looking at the level of affect utilized in them. “Anticommunist films” are a social diffusion/reinforcement apparatus of anticommunism that has functioned as a dominant ideology for several decades in South Korea. Anticommunism is not a single idea or logical system but rather a complex of affect/emotions expressed in different ways depending on the times. It is also mingled with various contradictory logic and affect. The anticommunist education of schools for diffusion and the reinforcement of anticommunism progressed in the forms of sentimental education, which fomented negative feelings like hatred and enmity. The “anticommunist film” proposed an alternative for the crisis of anticommunist education, which was a cultural project that propagated anticommunism at the level of affect. However, the “anticommunist film” as a project of affect has been eristic since it was categorized, a result of the obscure and incompatible relationship between humanism, entertainment, and nationalistic sentiments. Popular feature films are characterized by their goal of creating an emotional communion with the people while securing box office success; this consequentially brought about disharmony with anticommunism. The “anticommunist films” that drew attention as a brilliant medium of anticommunist propaganda became embroiled in a dilemma, as they could not help but betray communism, from which they were conceived. Cinema is a space where the dominant ideology of the state is realized, and where the popular affect against it is simultaneously reflected; it is a place of possibility from which defiance and public imagination sprout. In this viewpoint, the “anticommunist films,” an anticommunist project of affect, was always an apprehensive plan, where the possibility of failure was inherent. The reason why the people could not internalize anticommunism in the 1960’s is because such anxiety composed the essence of anticommunism. In the strictest sense, it was not anxiety toward communism but an apprehension toward failure of an anticommunist project of affect.
