국문 초록

사원이나 국가, 즉 종교나 정치의 관할 하에 있었던 도서관의 오랜 역사는 지식의 수집, 정리, 보존의 주도권이 권력과 관련되어 있을 수밖에 없다는 사실을 상징적으로 보여준다. 식민지 시기, ‘제국’의 권력도, ‘대학’의 권위도 없었던, 게다가 서양인 선교사의 기독 학교로 알려져 있었던 미션스쿨인 연희전문학교 도서관으로 가문과 개인의 도서가 유입된 역사적 사실은 ‘지식의 보관소’로 식민지 ‘정부’가 아닌 다른 영역이 상상되고 존재하고 있었음을 드러내준다. 1930년대 연희전문 도서관의 ‘개인문고’는 선교사와 조선인 엘리트가 선구 근대 지식과 유교 /실학 전통을 접속시키면서 조선 사회에 뿌리내 리고, 지식 아카이브로서의 공신력을 두고 제국과 경합하며, 동시에 친일적 인물의 장서도 흡습 해야했던 고투를 날 것으로 보여주는 역사적 공간이다. 선교사가 설립한 연희전문은 한문학 소양에 기반한 서양 유학파인 조선인들을 교수로 대거 기용하며 동양과 서양이 하나가 되는 ‘동서 화충’을 추구했다. 그 일환으로 정인보를 위시한 조선인 교수들의 ‘조선학’에의 매진과 ‘문서고’ 강화 사업은 ‘문헌학’이 곧 ‘국학’이라는 빌헬름 훔볼트의 이념 하에 설립되었던 근대 대학의 효시인 베를린 대학을 상기시킨다.

영문 초록

The long history of libraries under the management of temples or nations, that is, of religious or political authorities, symbolically shows that the collection, organization, and preservation of knowledge are bound to be associated with power. The historical fact that books from families and individuals were brought into the Chosen Christian College Library — a mere mission school established by a western missionary that did not have the power of an “empire” nor the authority of a “university” — reveals that a domain other than the colonial “government” existed as an “archive of knowledge” during the colonial period. The “personal library” of the Chosen Christian College in the 1930s was a historical space that candidly reflected the struggle through which missionaries and the Chosen elites applied modern knowledge to the traditions of Confucianism and Silhak, competed with the imperial power to win the name of a knowledge archive, and even embraced the books of pro-Japanese individuals at the time. The Chosen Christian College, which was founded by a missionary, promoted “harmony between the east and the west” by hiring Chosen people who had studied in the West but whose knowledge was based on Chinese literature as professors. The vigorous endeavors to research the “Study of Chosen” by Chosenese professors, including Chung In-bo, and the “archive” reinforcement project mimicked the University of Berlin — the first of modern universities,founded by Wilhelm von Humboldt under the philosophy that studying “philology” was the same as studying a “nation.”
