King Sejong’s Issue Leadership

국문 초록

조선시대의 세종대왕을 실용적 리더로, 그리고 세조를 사유화된 카리스마적 리더로 정의하고 양자의 리더십행위를 실용적 리더십이론의 한 형태인 이슈리더십 측면에서 비교하였다. 이슈리더십의 세 차원인 이슈창안, 오디언스몰입, 그리고 이슈실행에 기초하여, 실용적 리더인 세종대왕이 사유화된 카리스마리더십을 보였던 세조보다 창의적(또는 혁신적) 이슈들에 통계적으로 유의하게 더 많이 의존했으며, 세종이 세조보다 오디언스몰입을 더 많이 활용했고, 아울러 세종이 효과적 이슈실행행위를 더 자주 보여줬을 것이라는 가설을 설정하였다. 조선왕조실록 중에서 세종과 세조실록의 자료에 기초하여 패널연구방법을 이용하여 이 세 가설을 검증하였다. 그 결과, 세종대왕이 세조보다 창의적 이슈개발에 더 많이 의존했다(13.2% vs. 3.8%)는 결과를 얻었다. 뿐만 아니라, 세종이 세조보다 오디언스몰입행위를 더 자주 보여줬고, 이슈실행에 있어서도 세종이 세조보다 통계적으로 유의하게 더 정교한 전략을 활용했음이 밝혀졌다. 이럼으로써, 본 연구에서 설정했던 세가설이 모두 지지되었다. 이러한 연구결과의 함의와 한계, 그리고 향후의 연구방향에 대해서 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Defining King Sejong as a pragmatic leader and King Sejo as a personalized charismatic leader, we have contrasted King Sejong’s behaviors with King Sejo’s on issue leadership that definitizes pragmatic leadership. Based on the three dimensions of issue leadership, i.e., issue raising, audience involving, and issue executing, we hypothesized that King Sejong relied on pursuit of innovative issues significantly more than did King Sejo, that King Sejong utilized audience involvement significantly more than did King Sejo and that King Sejong depended on elaborate implementation of an issue significantly more than did King Sejo. Employing the panelist research method based on the Sillok of Joseon Dynasty, we tested the hypotheses, the results revealing that King Sejong relied on development of innovative issues (13.2%) far more than did King Sejo (3.8%). In addition, King Sejong more frequently involved audiences of various kinds than did King Sejo, while the former used more elaborate execution strategy than the latter. Thus all three hypotheses were supported. Implications of the study were discussed along with study limitations.
