국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 6학년 아동을 대상으로 하여 형제 구조가 도덕성에 미치는 영향을 확인하는데 있다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 형제 구조를 형제 수, 출생 순위, 형제의 성 구성, 연령차의 4가지 하위 요인으로 분류하고 도덕성을 Rest의 4-구성요소 모형에 근거하여 분석하였다. 연구 대상은 서울, 경기 지역 5개 학교 6 학년 학생 382명으로 하였으며 딜레마를 읽고 질문에 응답하는 설문조사를 통해 형제 구조와 도덕성을 조사하였다. 연구 결과, 형제 수 출생 순위, 형제 성 구성, 손위 형제와의 연령차에 따라 아동의 도덕성이 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 아동의 형제 수와 이성 형제가 도덕성에 긍정적인 영향을 주며, 출생 순위와 손위 형제와의 연령차가 아동이 도덕적 행동과 실천에 영향을 미침을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of sibling structure on morality of 6th-grade elementary school children. The existing studies on child morality have mainly analyzed moral judgment, so have failed to measure the holistic morality of children. The study of sibling structure and morality, therefore, have a limitation considering its importance in child development. Therefore, in order to overcome the limitations of the prior research, this study focused on sibling structure and examined how sibling structure was related to morality based on Rest s 4-component theory. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of sibling structure on comprehensive morality. In order to answer the questions, a total of 382 students 6th graders from schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas responded questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of two dilemmas to measure moral judgment (e.g. cognitive morality), two dilemmas to measure moral sensitivity, motivation (e.g. affective morality), and character (e.g. behavioral morality). In order to examine the effect of the sibling structure on the morality of the children, we examined the relationship between children s number of siblings, birth order, sibling composition. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and post-hoc analysis (Scheffe test) were conducted using SPSS Statistics 22.0 program. Results and implications are as follows: First, this study confirms that the number of siblings influence positively on morality in general. These results suggest that interactions among siblings help to develop morality and having multiple children positively influence the moral development of children. Second, there was a significant difference in moral character according to the children s birth order and the age gap with the siblings. The position of the target child in the family and the role required accordingly influenced the moral behavior and practices. It is important to note that when the birth order of children was the youngest, moral character was low. It is necessary for youngest children to give and encourage more opportunity to practice moral behavior in home and school. Third, although there was no significant correlation between the gender of the child and morality, there was a significant difference in moral character depending on the gender composition among the siblings. This suggests that the interaction with different gender may be more helpful to develop morality. Finally, moral judgment had no significant correlation with any element of sibling structure, while moral character had a significant correlation with all sibling structure factors. This indicates that sibling structure is more likely to associated with behavioral rather than cognitive/ intellectual morality. In addition, moral character was higher as the composition of the children s siblings varied, so it could be expected that interaction with various kinds of siblings could stimulate the moral behavior and practice of the child.
