장보고 리더십과 기업가 정신

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 1200년 전 동아시아 해상무역을 주도하며 진정한 의미의 글로벌화 (globalization)를 몸소 보여준 글로벌 CEO, 장보고의 리더십 특성을 체계적으로 살펴보고, 그가 지녔던 진취적인 기업가정신을 도출하여 오늘날의 기업가들에게 적용해 보는 것이다. 본 논문은 크게 두 부분으로 구성되며, 전반부는 장보고가 보여준 구체적인 리더십 특성들을, 그리고 후반부는 오늘날의 기업가들이 교훈으로 삼을 수 있는 장보고의 기업가 정신과 실제 기업들의 사례를 살펴본다. 장보고 리더십에 대한 대부분의 선행 연구들은 체계적 분석틀이 없이, 장보고의 생애와 관련된 단편적 사료들을 가지고 그의 인간적 특성이나 CEO로서의 자질 등을 분석하여 왔다. 본 연구는 장보고의 생애를 리더가 되기 위한 준비기, 장수(군인)로서의 장보고, 해상무역가로서의 장보고, 그리고 장수이자 해상무역가로서의 장보고로 나누어 파악하고, 그의 리더십 특성을 군인이자 기업가라는 두 가지 측면에서 함께 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 전반부에서는 장보고 리더십 특성을 파악하기 위해 미 육군의 성공적인 리더십 모델인 BE-KNOW-DO 원칙을 적용하여 군인이자 해상무역가로서의 장보고 리더십 특성을 성품, 능력, 그리고 행동력 부분으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 또한 한 사람의 영웅적 리더에 대한 환상(myth of a heroic leader)을 경계하여 세계적인 리더십 학자 Gary A. Yukl이 제시한 Flexible Leadership 모델을 적용하여 하나의 조직으로서 장보고 선단의 성공요인과 그것을 가능하게 했던 장보고 리더십의 특성들을 살펴보았다. 연구의 후반부에서는 새롭게 떠오르는 민간무역의 무궁한 가능성을 정확히 읽고, 그것을 두려움 없이 실천에 옮긴 장보고의 기업가정신(entrepreneurship)에 주목하였다. 먼저 기업가정신의 일반적인 개념을 살펴본 후에, 우리나라 역사상 처음으로 해적을 물리치고 바닷길을 개척하여 동북아시아 해상권을 장악한 위대한 바다 영웅 장보고의 기업가정신을 도출하였다. 또한, 한 기업가가 지닌 기업가정신은 그 기업가가 살고 있는 시대와 환경에 따라 적절히 적응하고 변화해야 하므로 먼 과거속의 인물인 장보고의 기업가정신이 과연 어떻게 오늘날의 경영환경에 적용될 수 있는가를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 실제로 해양의 중요성을 어린 나이에 간파하고, 해양과 관련된 새로운 비즈니스 모델을 창출하여 진정한 해양 기업가정신을 보여준 세 사람의 CEO를 사례로 제시하고 그 로부터 교훈을 도출하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the leadership characteristics of Chang Po-Go who dominated the maritime trades in northeastern Asia and showed the importance of globalization twelve hundred years ago. Also, Chang Po-Go’s progressive entrepreneurship was analyzed and applied into current-time enterprises. The study was divided into two parts : The leadership characteristics of Chang Po-Go were investigated in the first half of the study, and the lessons from his entrepreneurship and real business cases were analyzed in the second half. Most prior research about Chang Po-Go’s leadership simply analyzed his human traits or characteristics as a CEO without any systematic frames. His life was divided into four time periods: preparatory time for being a leader, Chang Po-Go as a senior officer, Chang Po-Go as a maritime businessman, and Chang Po-Go both as a senior officer and businessman. In the first half of the study, “BE-KNOW-DO” principle of the U. S. army leadership was used to analyze Chang Po-Go’s leadership in the areas of character, capabilities, and ability to make things move. Furthermore, a world well-known leadership researcher, Gary A. Yukl’s flexible leadership model, in which the myth of a heroic leader was deemphasized, was adopted to extract the strengths and advantages of Chang Po-Go’s fleet as an successful organization. The second half of the study focused on Chang Po-Go’ entrepreneurship with which he seized a big opportunity of private international trade and quickly moved into that market. General concepts of entrepreneurship was introduced. Then, the entrepreneurship of Chang Po-Go who first, in the Korean history, defeated pirates with his military base, Cheonghae-jin, secured maritime trading roads, and dominated international maritime trade in northeastern Asia. Because entrepreneurship of businessmen should be changed according to the era and circumstances in which they live, three CEOs as good examples of Chang Po-Go’ entrepreneurship were introduced and the lessons from the cases were mentioned.
