국문 초록

인터넷이 보편화되고 거래 방식이 비대면화 되어 가면서 기업들은 온라인 상의 교환 수단을 필요로 하게 되었고, 이를 계기로 기존통화와 다른 새로운 형태의 가상통화 (virtual currency)들이 출현하게 되었다. 특히 최근에는 특정 커뮤니티의 범위에서 벗어 나온·오프라인을 아우르는 다양한 거래를 가능하게 하는 비트코인(Bitcoin)과 같은 범용적인 가상통화까지 등장해 관심을 끌고 있다. 그러나 현재까지 가상통화를 어떻게 이해할 것인가에 대한 고찰은 부족한 실정이다. 한편 가상통화의 활성화 방안을 모색하기 위해선 가상통화가 금융시스템에 미치는 잠재적인 영향을 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 이에 본 연구는 가상통화에 대한 역사적 고찰과 더불어 금융시스템에 미치는 가상통화의 잠재적인 영향을 분석하였다. 가상통화의 발전과정을 살펴본 결과, 1990년대에 출현한 가상통화들은 충분한 사용자들을 확보하지 못함으로써 자금부족으로 실패한 경우가 많았으며, 그 이후 2000년대에 출현한 가상통화들은 주로 가상 커뮤니티를 중심으로 발달 하였다. 그리고 2000년대 중반 이후에 들어서는 가상통화의 사용범위가 점점 넓어져, 범용적인 통화의 모습을 갖춘 가상통화들이 등장하게 되었다. 향후 가상통화가 더욱 활성화되기 위해서는 가격의 안정성, 금융의 안정성, 지급결제시스템의 안정성, 법과 규율 등의 영역에서 가상통화 도입으로 예상되는 문제점들을 선제적으로 해결할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 저자들이 아는 한 국내에서 가상통화의 역사적 고찰을 최초로 시도한 연구로서 의의를 지니며, 향후 가상통화와 관련된 연구를 활성화하는 데에 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Since the Internet became universal and non face-to-face transactions has become the norm, various firms began to seek a new medium of exchange for the online market; this led to the emergence of a new form of currency. Several different types of this new currency appeared, ranging from electric money, which retains the legal value of the original currency, to virtual currency, which can be used in exclusively in specific communities. Recently, universal virtual currencies such as the Bitcoin have drawn widespread attention due to its facilitation of both on- and off-line transactions outside of the communities as well. Virtual currencies hold quite an importance in today’s society, now that they are constantly evolving and deconstructing the wall between traditional currencies; this allows us to rethink the concept of currency. However, the reality is that there is a lack of study and preparation for the understanding of this virtual currency, which has already been permeated into our everyday lives. As such, we investigated the historical development of virtual currencies in order to discuss the prospect of its future usage. On the other hand, it is highly important to be aware of the potential effects of virtual currencies on the financial system, in order to seek a way to encourage the use of virtual currencies. This research is among the first in Korea to attempt a historic examination of virtual currencies, and hopes it contributes to related researches in the future.
