요가수행문화의 가능성

국문 초록

본고는 현대사회에서 요가수행문화가 과연 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있는지에 관해 기술한다. 필자는 요가가 문화현상의 하나로서 계승되어 왔다는 기본 입장을 갖는다. 요가의 실천은 대체로 개인적인 차원에서 이루어져 왔지만 보급과 계승이라는 관점에서 보자면 사회적·문화적 측면 을 배제할 수 없다. 이점은 현대사회의 특수성을 무시하고서 요가수행문 화의 가능성을 논의할 수 없다는 결론으로 이어진다. 현대사회의 특수성 은 전통적인 요가의 가르침에 변형을 불러일으킬 수 있다. 실제로 신자 유주의 경제체제는 요가의 보급과 실천에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 그러나 필자는 요가의 가르침에 내포된 몇몇 측면은 현대사회의 특수성을 뛰어넘는 초역사적 성격을 지닌다는 사실에 주목한다. 특히 고전요가의 형이상학은 신자유주의에서 비롯된 소비문화의 문제점을 극복하는 데 긍정적인 역할을 수행할 수 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 측면들을 종합적으로 검토함으로써 현대사회에서 요가수행문화의 가능성을 모색한다.

영문 초록

This paper is to describe whether the culture of yogic exercise could have a meaning in modern society. I think that yoga is a kind of cultural phenomenon. Although the exercises of yoga have usually been practiced on a personal level, the problems about dissemination and inheritance of yoga are deeply involved with the social and the cultural aspects. This fact leads to the conclusion that we can not discuss on the possibility of the culture of yogic exercise without considering the social and the cultural aspects. Particularities of modern society can cause strain on the traditional teachings of yoga. In fact, the neoliberal economic system has affected the dissemination and practice of yoga. However, I also pay attention to the teachings of yoga beyond the particularities of modern society in some aspects. Especially, the metaphysics of classical yoga can perform a positive role in overcoming the problems of consumer culture which come from the neoliberal economic system. I think that the possibility of the culture of yogic exercise should be discussed on the comprehensive consideration of all these aspects.
