영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to add to the statistical data now available on cleft lip and cleft palate with relatlon to different areas and periods, and then to gain the information about the etiology and prevention of these congenital defects. We analyzed the medical histories of 192 cleft lip and/or cleft palate patients who presented at Seoul National University Hospital Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The factors investigated were types of clefts, their incidence, sex involved, seasonal incidence, urban and rural incidence, incidence with relation to parental age and birth rank, the incidence of associated anomalies, familial histories. From the data collected, we could obtain the conclusions as follows ; 1. Of all clefts studied, cleft lip and palate cases occurred most frequently and male cases occurred more frequently than female. 2. Of the cases with the lip involved, unilateral cases occurred more frequently than bilateral cases and did more frequently on the left side than the right. 3. There were no significant seasonal variation, on the other hand all groups of clefts occurred more frequently in the urban area. 4. There were more cases of clefts in the first-born group and parents in the group aged 25 to 30 had the greatest incidence. 5. Of the all cases studied, 4.7% had associated anomalies and 5.2% showed a positive hereditary background.
