『中等萬國地誌』 판본의 서지사항과 외래 지명 표기 양상 비교

국문 초록

『中等萬國地誌』는 근대계몽기 학부편집국에서 新刊本(1902년)과 重刊本(1907년)을 발간하였으며, 외래 지명 표기에서 뚜렷한 차이점을 가지고 있는 세계지리 교과서이다. 이에 新刊本과 重刊本의 주요 서지사항과 외래지명의 표기에서 나타나는 양상을 비교, 분석하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 新刊本과 重刊本은 같은 활자체, 같은 내용의 1帙 3冊으로 발간되었다. 13행28자로 구성된 新刊本은 국한문혼용체에 외래 지명과 인명 등을 괄호 안의 영문으로 병기하였지만, 14행35자로 구성된 重刊本은 영문 지명을 괄호 안의 한글로 변용 표기하였다. 둘째, 新刊本에서 영문으로 표기되고 있는 지명은 인문 지명(대륙·국가·지역·도시), 자연 지명(산지·하천·해안 지형), 인명 및 기타의 다양한 유형으로 나타났으며, 인문 지명의 수록 비중이 가장 높았다. 마지막으로 외래 지명의 표기에서 나타나는 특징은 중국식 한자 지명의 계속적인 수용과 한글 지명 표기를 통한 자국어화 현상이다.

영문 초록

Jungdeongmangukjiji(中等萬國地誌) is a world geography textbook whose first edition and revised edition were published in 1902 and 1907, respectively, by Hakbu during the Korean enlightenment period. These two editions have remarkable differences in the notation of foreign place names. Accordingly, the major bibliographical descriptions of the first edition and the revised edition were compared and reviewed. The aspects that appeared in the acceptance and transformation of foreign place names notation were examined. The major research results are as follows. The first edition and the revised edition used the same typeface and had the same contents and were published each in three volumes. In the first edition composed of 13 lines and 28 letters, Korean- Chinese characters mixed up style were used. Foreign place names and person names were written in English and enclosed in parentheses, but in the revised edition composed of 14 lines and 35 letters, English place names were written in Korean and enclosed in parentheses. Second, the place names written in English in the first edition were represented in various forms such as human·physical place names, person names and others. Finally, the characteristics found in terms of the acceptance and transformation of foreign place names involve the phenomenon of foreign place names becoming native place names through the continuous acceptance of Chinese character place names and the notation of Hangeul place names.
