버지니아 울프의 『등대로』에 나타난 모성과 공감의 환상

국문 초록

이 논문은 버지니아 울프(Virginia Woolf)의 『등대로』(To the Lighthouse)의 두 등장인물 램지 부인(Mrs. Ramsay)과 릴리 브리스코(Lily Briscoe)의 관계를 대리 모녀관계로 상정하고 작품에서 나타나는 모성과 공감에 대한 이데올로기적 환상의 성격과 그 해체의 방법을 살펴보고자 한다. 『등대로』에서 울프는 모성을 남성 중심 이데올로기가 만들어낸 환상의 일부로서, 여성의 진정한 성별 정체성의 탐색을 저해하는 요소로 보고 있다. 어머니적 존재인 램지부인은 모성 이데올로기가 만들어낸 환상의 베일 아래 작동하는 인물로 자신이 추구하는 가치들이 이데올로기에 의한 환상임을 바로 감지해내지 못한다. 반면 릴리는 램지부인이 추구하는 욕망과 그녀에게 투사된 주변 인물들의 욕망이 램지부인을 좋은 여성이자 아내 그리고 어머니로 억압할 뿐이라는 것을 인식하는 인물이다. 그러나 릴리 또한 이데올로기의 모순을 인식하는 것과 별개로 램지부인에게 낸시 초도로우(Nancy Chodorow)가 설명하는 것과 같은 어머니를 향한 양가적인 공감을 추구하는 환상에서 쉽게 벗어나지 못한다. 릴리는 어머니적 존재인 램지부인에게 투사한 공감의 환상을 가로지르고 타인과의 관계에서는 자신의 욕망을 성취할 없음을 자각하는 과정을 통해 램지부인을 투사하여 그림을 완성하고자 했던 단계에서 벗어나 자신만의 그림을 완성한다. 릴리의 예술적 성취는 미학적인 것일 뿐만 아니라 전통적인 여성상과 공감에 대한 환상을 해체하는 작업의 결과인 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to analysis Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse within the framework of surrogate mother-daughter relationship. Woolf deals with a male-dominated ideology that suppresses deviation from normative roles. She considers maternity as an ideological fantasy, which is dismantled through the protagonists’explorations of their identities. The mothers perform their given role behind the veil of fantasy. Since the screen of ideological fantasy conceals this illusion, the women, who are the subject of fantasy, can hardly see this illusion for themselves. Lily recognizes her surrogate mothers are under pressure to be good women, wives, and mothers. As Nancy Chodorow points out, daughters are torn by the competing desires to unify with their mother and to establish independence from their mother. At first, Lily also shows her ambivalent desires for maternal empathy. However, the differences between Mrs. Ramsay and herself make her aware of the impossibility of obtaining complete maternal empathy. She realizes that she should overcome the desire for her mother in order to gain her own identity. Since Lily discerns the flaw in their ambivalent desires, her fantasies transfer to other pursuits. Lily concentrates on her painting. The artistic activities become new objects of fantasy for Lily. By traversing their fantasy, their way to attain identity is changed. To acquire identity, it is important for Lily to face the shortcomings of her fantasies of maternal empathy, and she must traverse the suppressed fantasy that conceals its own incompleteness.
