Updating Hofstede’s Cultural Model and Tracking Changes in Cultural Indices

영문 초록

This paper aims to find out whether the national scores of Hofstede’s cultural model are now outdated and if it should be modified or not. The Tang and Koveos (TK) model previously examined 20 years of cultural change between 1970 and 1990. We extended Tang and Koveos’s model by adding 2010 data in order to grasp the changes of culture over not only the past 20 years, but of the past 40 years. We developed updated cultural indices of both the Hofstede and GLOBE models to test if cultural indices changed within any of the three time periods from 1970 to 1990, 1990 to 2010 and from 1970 to 2010. The results of this study found that individualism and power distance were changed during the period from 1970 to 1990, individualism and uncertainty avoidance were changed from 1990 to 2010, and power distance, individualism and uncertainty avoidance were changed from 1970 to 2010. In particular, the individualism cultural dimension was found to consistently change over time, thus reaffirming the importance of adjusting the cultural dimensions over time.
