There are several theories as to when, where and how Korean tea culture began, including the Samwhalyung tea of Chungdamsa, tea seeds of the Embassy to Dang Dynasty Daeryum, Moonsu tea of Prince Bochen and Hyomyung, General tea of Queen Hur, hwang-ok, which makes it difficult to fix the date at which Korean tea culture began and its route. This paper proposes that the little known establishment of Gusansunmoon at the turn of the dynasty from Shilla to Goryeo might be one route through which the tea culture was introduced into Korea. The establishment of Gusansunmoon may have taken place later than the other routes mentioned above, but its route was comparatively distinct and helped Korean tea culture take on a Buddhist hue, especially a Zen Buddhist character. As Gusansunmoon was later incorporated into a big order, the Jogye Order, and became the mainstream of Korean Buddhism in the middle of the Goryeo dynasty, the characteristic hue of Zen Buddhism of Korean tea culture became evident. This paper attempts to make use of the findings of some archaeological excavation work of recent years to identify the essence of the tea culture of Gusansunmoon. A variety of pottery was unearthed which turned out to be tea instruments, suggesting that tea culture was not only practiced in the main temples of Gusansunmoon, but also in many subsidiary temples. Thus, there is reason to believe that the Zen tea culture of Gusansunmoon encouraged tea culture to thrive throughout the Goryeo era when Buddhism was honored as the national religion. In spite of the flowering of tea culture in Goryeo, the ensuing Joseon Dynasty suppressed Buddhism in favor of Confucianism, resulting in the shrinkage of tea culture in comparison with that in the neighboring countries such as China and Japan. The spirit of Gusansunmoon is all the more important when attempting to enhance our contemporary tea culture because of its immense impact on the establishment of Korean tea culture. The Zen character of tea culture has now become one element of our traditional culture, not just a Buddhist one.
