잭슨 폴락의 블랙페인팅(Black Painting)에서 동양서예의 영향

국문 초록

이 글은 미국 추상표현주의 화가 잭슨 폴락의 만년의 작품 군을 이루는 ‘블랙페인팅’의 성립과정에서 동양의 서예가 끼친 영향을 고찰해보고자 하는 것이다. 블랙페인팅이란 폴락이 1951-53년경에 제작한 검정 일색으로 구성된 일련의 작품을 가 리킨다. 이들 작품에서는 푸어링 기법을 사용하면서 당시까지 행했던 그의 추상적인 작품과는 달리 구상적 형상이 그려져 있다. 또 화선지 같은 흡수성이 강한 매체를 사용함으로써, 도료의 스며드는 효과를 의도한 점도 특색이다. 이러한 작품형태를 볼 때 동양의 서예로부터 영향을 받았을 것으로 추정되지만, 지금까지 이에 대한 명확한 연구가 행해지지 않았다. 따라서 이 글에서는 우선 그동안 왜 이에 대한 연구가 행해지지 않았는지 그 배경을 밝힌다. 여기에서 미국의 예술에 대한 정치적 의도를 고찰한 후에, 특히 클레멘트 그린버그의 평론을 검토한다. 그렇게 함으로써 미국인 폴락을 유럽 모더니즘의 정당한 후계자로서 자리매김했다는 사실, 또 그러기위해 동양예술로부터의 영향은 쓸데없는 일로서 일체 배제해왔다는 사실이 분명해질 것이다. 그러나 실제로는 1953년에 뉴욕 근대미술관에서 동양 서예전시회가 개최되는 등 당시 미국에서 동 양예술에 대한 관심은 확실히 고조되어 있었다. 또 폴락 자신도 동양 서예에 심취하고 있었던 주위 작가들의 영향을 받아, 1950년에는 직접 서예도구를 사용하여 작품을 제작하고 있다. 이러한 영향관계를 바탕으로 다음으로는 서예가 블랙페인팅 형성에 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는가를 밝힌다. 여기에서 우리는 1950년의 서예적 문자작품에 착안하여, 그것들이 초기의 이미지와 블랙페인팅을 잇는 중요한 역할을 행하고 있음에 주목하고 자 한다. 초기의 이미지는 잭슨 러싱 등에 의해 인디언에서 유래하는 그림 문자의 형상임이 지적되었다. 요컨대 폴락은 문자를 쓴다고 하는 서예의 수법을 받아들임으로써, 과거의 그림 문자의 형상을 다시 묘사하는 방법을 새롭게 창출했는데, 이것이 블랙페인팅 성립의 중요한 요인이 되었던 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the influence of East Asian calligraphy in Jackson Pollock s ‘black paintings which indicate the series of monochromes produced from 1951 to 1953. Pollock depicted figurative shape in these works contrary to his previous abstract painting. These works show the traits of permeating effect of paint absorbing into paper or canvas. From their characteristics the influence of East Asian calligraphy can be presumed positively, but no one proved it clearly yet. Accordingly, I disclosed the background why the research on this problem did not conducted all the while. Here, I investigated the political intention of United States to art culture, especially Clement Greenberg s idea of ‘American-type painting. Greenberg, who was influential in the field of art at that age, tried to deprive the main stream of art from Europe and eliminated the influence from Eastern art in Pollock s works. And his purpose is to present Pollock as a legitimate successor of European modernism. However, in fact, there was held Eastern calligraphy exhibition in New York in 1953, and the spirit of Zen Buddhism was spread in America. There were many artists such as Mark Tobey, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Willem de Kooning who were interested in calligraphy around Pollock. And Pollock possessed some books about Eastern culture, and used tools of calligraphy in 1950. Pollock was surely influenced by calligraphy. Moreover, I pointed out that Pollock often depicted letters. In his black paintings, Pollock also depicted the pictograph images that he had already painted before. He had interested in the pictograph of American Indian and Chinese characters from early years. The reason that Pollock was influenced by calligraphy may come from such concern about letters. Pollock created a new way to depict his past pictograph images by adopting the technique of writing in calligraphy, which could be important factor for the establishment of black paintings.
