국문 초록

본 논문은 엘리자베스 비숍(Elizabeth Bishop) 시에 나타난 중심 주제인 풍경과 여행이 그녀의 내면을 향하는 여정이라는 사실을 조명하였다. 비숍은 당대의 특정 학파나 사조, 즉 비트파 혹은 고백파 시인으로 쉽게 분류될 수 없기에 동시대 미국 시인들과 명백히 구별된 다. 비숍 시의 주요 특성인 기이함과 모호성으로 인해 그녀는 현재 미국에서 비평가들로부터 가장 높은 평가를 받고 있는 여성 시인들 중 한 명이다. 전기에서 후기에 이르는 여러 시를 통해 비숍은 끊임없이 여행에 관한 질문을 자신의“내면으로의 질주”(driving to the interior)와 연관시키고 있다. 그녀 부모님의 때이른 죽음으로 인해 부득이 어린 시절부터 여러 장소를 전전하게 된 비숍은 일평생 고향 상실감을 느끼게 되었다. 그녀의 외조 모부와 함께 살았던 캐나다의 노바 스코티아에서 출발하여 브라질에서 이르는 머나먼 여정 에 대한 체험을 모티프로 한 비숍의 시는 바로 이런 사실에서 기인하고 있다. 이런 점에서 비숍의 시가 근원적으로 그녀의 사적인 여행, 곧 자신의 내면을 향한 여정에 기초하고 있 다는 사실은 중요하다. 비숍의 시는 대부분 그녀의 정밀한 관찰과 더불어 그녀가 경험했던 다양한 풍경과 여행 에 관한 명상으로 충만하다. 중요한 점은 비숍이 여행 중에 마주친 풍경에 대한 묘사는 복 잡한 기억이나 의미들로 채워진 자신의 기억의 층에서 구축되어 있기에 정신의 산물과 불 가분적 연관성을 지니고 있다는 사실이다. 그래서 노바 스코티아와 브라질이라는 특정한 두 장소는 내적 깨달음을 추구하고자 했던 비숍에게 끊임없이 영감의 원천으로 나타나고 있다. 그녀의 상상력에서 노바 스코티아와 브라질은 시간과 공간의 경계를 가로질러 서로의 지리적 거울 이미지로 기능하고 있다. 따라서“우리는 집에 머물며 이곳을 생각해야 하는가? / 오늘 우리는 어디에 있어야 하는가?”라는 비숍의 질문은 다름 아닌 여행의 본질에 대한 대답을 동시에 반영하고 있는 그녀의 예리한 통찰이다. 비숍의 여행에 관한 질문과 대답은 바로 현재의 삶에서 일상적인 경외감을 깨닫는 순간에 발현되는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to analyze that the central themes of landscapes and travels in Elizabeth Bishop's poetry definitely moves toward her inner self. As she couldn't be classified into the specific school of poetry such as the Beats or the Confessional poets, Bishop is clearly distinguished from her contemporary American poets. Typically, Bishop has been recognized as one of the most critically respected female poets because of her strange and ambiguous writing style. From her early to late period, Bishop ceaselessly associates the questions of travel with“driving to the interior”of her own mind in her poetry. Having felt sense of homelessness from her childhood because of her parents' early death, Bishop has wandered lots of different places starting from her maternal grandparents' house in Nova Scotia, Canada. As she traveled lots of different places from Europe to Brazil since she came of age, her writings were fundamentally based on her own private journeys. Most of her poems are filled with her precise observations and meditations on various landscapes and travels she experienced. It is important that the landscape Bishop describes in her poetry means a work of the mind because it is built up as much from the strata of her memory. For Bishop, the two different places, Nova Scotia and Brazil, play important roles in her search for the inner awakening. Throughout her life, Nova Scotia and Brazil act as the geographical mirror images of each other, transcending the bounds of time and space. Consequently, her questions that“Should we have stayed at home and thought of here? / Where should we be today?”epitomize her insightful answers to the nature of travel at the same time. Bishop's insightful questions and answers of travel are revealed at the moment of awakening the daily wonders of present life.
