『솔로몬의 노래』에 나타난 흑인의 현존과‘기억창고’

국문 초록

모리슨이 형상화한 흑인 공동체 구성원의 비상과 추락의 이미저리는 과거의 역사인 ‘솔로몬의 신화’에 내재한 흑인공동체의 원형성에 대한 추적이며 동시에 미래 흑인 공동체의 자유를 향한 영적 갈망을 상징한다. 그런 의미에서『솔로몬의 노래』에 나타나는 자유를 향 한 몸짓은 현재와 단절된 과거의 사건이 아니라 아직 기억의 창고에 저장된 흑인의 원초적인 생명력을 복원하려는 기원의 의미이다. 흑인의 원초적인 생명력의 복원은 흑인의 역사를 현재의 공간에 끄집어내서 흑인사회 구성원 모두가 공유하게 될 때만 가능할 수 있다. 모리슨은 백인 지배문화에 의해 가려지고 지워진 흑인 고유의 전통과 인격적 관계를 바탕으로 한 사랑과 책임을 끌어낸다. 인간에 대한 사랑과 책임은 자본주의적인 교환가치의 소 유에서 나오는 욕망과 물질적인 안락감을 대가로 치러야 한다. 흑인 공동체의 복원은 흑인 역사를 인식하고 과거의 현재화에서 출발한다. 백인에 의해 억압된 인권과 규정되어진 성 역할도 흑인으로서의 정체성의 확립의 기반위에서만 전복될 수 있다. 흑인문화의 차이와 다양성의 고려가 도리어 흑인들의 억압과 문화적 열등성을 정당화하는 수단으로 이용되는 백인의 문화적인 헤게모니에 의문을 제기하는 관점에서, 모리슨은 흑인 공동체의 복원 가 능성을 현재화한 흑인 역사로 연결하고, 백인지배 역사 내에서 흑인의 역사를 다시 생각할 수 있는 가능성과 흑인의 문화적 정체성을 재정립할 수 있는 사고 공간을 제시한다. 모리슨이 백인의 문화적인 헤게모니에 의해 지워지고 지워진 흑인 공동체의 역사와 구전문화의 기억을 현재의 공간에 끌어내어 문화적 정체성의 재정립을 시도하고 있는 공간이 바로『솔로몬의 노래』이다. 모리슨은 메이컨 데드 2세, 루쓰, 포스터, 그리고 기타라는 인물을 형상 화함으로써 지배문화의 물화적인 가치관의 모순을 드러낸다. 그러나 흑인공동체 문화의 복원은 백인 지배문화의 해체와 전복만으로는 건설되지 않는다. 작가는 흑인에 잠재해온 원형적인 구전전통을‘기억 창고’에서 끌어내어 문자 문화의 동일성의 경계선 밖에 위치시킬 때만 흑인문화의 복원이 성취됨을 우리에게 제시한다.

영문 초록

Morrison, using the image of flying and falling among members of the African-American community, represents the search for the original "Myth of Solomon" inherent in the history of the African-American community while at the same time representing the spiritual yearning for freedom in the future. In accordance with that, the gesture towards freedom that is represented in Song of Solomon is not an event disconnected to the past or present, but rather a wish for the restoration of the African-American community's basic instinct for survival that still survives in their shared memory. The restoration of the African-American community's instinct for survival is only possible by moving the community's history into the present and by sharing it with the diverse members of the African-American community. Morrison focuses on the responsibility and love inherent in human relations and traditions within classical African culture long ignored by the dominant white culture. Humanistic love and responsibility are paid for with desire and materialistic comfort stemming from the ownership specified by capitalistic exchange value. The restoration of the African- American community begins with the recognition and modernization of African-American history. African-Americans will only be able to find a footing to right the wrongs of history imposed on them by white society such as a loss of human rights and fixed sexual roles by asserting their own subjectivity. Morrison wishes to question the hegemony of white culture that justifies its oppression of African-Americans based on cultural "inferiority" while allowing for the differences and variety that characterize African-American culture. The author also links the possibility of the restoration of the African-American community with the modernization of African-American history and opens the possibility for rethinking African- American history within the context of the dominant white historical narrative. In addition, Morrison suggests creating a space for the reestablishment of African-American cultural subjectivity. Song of Solomon is Morrison's attempt to create space for the reestablishment of cultural subjectivity by pulling together memories contained within oral history and the near erasure and loss of African-American community history brought on by the hegemony of white culture. Morrison, through the embodiment of characters such as Macon Dead II, Ruth, Foster, and Guitar, points out the contradictions in the value system of the dominant culture. However, it is not only by overthrowing and deconstructing the dominant white culture that the culture of the African-American community can be restored. The author proposes that only by utilizing latent African-American oral culture's‘ memory bank'(warehouse of memories), African-American culture can be located outside the boundaries imposed by cultural unity and thereby restored.
