병원 스케치에 나타난 루이자 메이 올컷의 양성성

국문 초록

본 논문은 1863년 출판된 중편소설 병원 스케치(Hospital Sketches)에 나타난 루이자 메이 올컷(Louisa May Alcott)의 양성적 상상력이 젠더와 인종적 해방에 대한 메타포로 기능하고 있다는 사실을 조명하였다. 일평생 올컷은 끊임없이 자신을 여성의 신체에 갇힌 “남성의 정신”을 지닌 양성적 인물로 간주했다. 이것은 “나는 나의 옷 안에 소년의 정신을 지니고 태어났다”는 올컷의 언급에서 단적으로 입증된다. 이렇게 올컷에 내재한 크로스젠더 (cross-gender) 정체성은 빅토리아 시대의 정형화된 여성성의 한계를 초월하고 있다. 특히 남북전쟁 기간 자신의 간호 체험에 기초를 두고 있는 병원 스케치는 올컷의 양성적 상상력의 정수를 보여준다. 올컷의 분신인 여주인공 트리뷸레이션 페리윙클(Tribulation Periwinkle) 은 종군 간호사로 병원에서 환자들을 간호하면서 자신에게 내재된 양성성을 드러낸다. 군사적이 며 또한 가정적인 메타포를 번갈아 사용하면서 페리윙클은 간호사-군인(nurse-soldier)으로 서 자신의 임무를 수행한다. 즉 페리윙클은 자신의 환자들을 “형제”로 간주하며 “남자답게” 임무를 수행하면서 동시에 그들에게 어머니 같은 면모를 보여주고 있다. 페리윙클에 대한 올컷의 묘사는 남성과 여성 사이의 경계를 흐리게 함으로써 이분법적 성 정체성이라는 고정관념을 탈피하고 있다. 페리윙클뿐만 아니라 병원 스케치에는 죽어가는 군인 존(John)을 포함한 다양한 남성 인물들이 여성화된 남성들로 변모되고 있다. 올컷은 남성 인물들을 여성화함으로써 자신의 양성적 상상력을 많은 익명의 군인들과 외과 의사들에게 확장하고 있다. 특히, “외과 의사”와 “재봉사”라는 직업은 명백히 젠더화되기 때문에 외과 의사인 피 박사(Dr. P)를 언급하는 일견 모순적으로 보이는 “외과 재봉사”(surgical seamstress)라는 용어는 올컷의 양성적 상상력을 집약하는 표현이라 할 수 있다. 무엇보다 올컷의 양성성은 젠더뿐만 아니라 인종의 경계를 가로지르고 있다는 사실은 주목할 만하다. 이것은 흑인 아이를 끌어안기를 거절한 동료 백인 여성간호사를 꾸짖으며 그를 포옹한 페리윙클의 행동을 묘사한 장면에서 극명하게 드러난다. 궁극적으로 올컷의 양성성은 젠더와 인종의 경계가 더 이상 존재하지 않는 새로운 미국에 대한 그녀의 비전을 시사하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines that Louisa May Alcott’s androgynous imagination functions as a metaphor for gender and racial liberation in the novella Hospital Sketches published in 1863. Through her entire life, Alcott consistently identifies herself with an androgynous figure who has a “man’s soul” trapped in a woman’s body. This is epitomized in her statement that “I was born with a boy’s spirit under my bib and tucker.” The cross-gender identity within Alcott transcends the limits of the stereotyped womanhood of Victorian era. Remarkably, Hospital Sketches based on her nursing experience during the Civil War reflects the essence of Alcott’s androgynous imagination. Nursing her patients in the hospital as a military nurse, the heroine Tribulation Periwinkle who is Alcott’s alter ego displays her inherent androgyny. Using alternatively both military and domestic metaphors, Periwinkle performs her mission as a nurse-solider. In other words, Periwinkle not only performs her duty “manfully” by regarding each of her patients as a “brother” but also appears like a mother to them. Alcott’s portrayals of Periwinkle markedly break out of the stereotype of dichotomous gender identity by blurring the boundaries between male and female. In addition to Periwinkle, a variety of male characters including the dying soldier John in the novella are transformed into the feminized males. Alcott expands her androgynous imagination into lots of anonymous soldiers and surgeons by feminizing them. Particularly, the seemingly contradictory term “surgical seamstress” referring to the surgeon Dr. P sums up Alcott’s androgynous imagination because the occupations of “surgeon” and “seamstress” are undoubtedly gendered. Most of all, Alcott’s androgyny crosses the boundaries of race as well as gender. This is epitomized in the scene of Periwinkle’s act of hugging a black child and reprimanding a white female nurse who refuses to pick up the child. Ultimately, Alcott’s androgyny suggests her vision for a new United States in which the gender and racial boundaries no longer exist.
