남성의 돌봄 실천과 성별분업 해체 가능성

국문 초록

페미니스트들이 남성 돌봄을 강조해온 것은 돌봄 경험이 돌봄의 중요성을 인식하게 하는 토대를 제공하고 그러한 인식을 토대로 성별분업이 해체될 것이라는 가능성 때문이다. 현재 한국은 남성 돌봄에 대한 수사만이 넘치고 있어 돌봄이 무엇이고, 왜 돌봄이 중요하고, 어떤 돌봄이 성 평등을 실현시킬 수 있는지에 대한 논의가 필요한 시점이다. 이를 위해 공동 돌봄하는 남성과 하지 않는 남성의 돌봄 경험을 비교 분석해 돌봄을 한다는 것이 어떤 것인지를 정의하고 돌봄 경험이 어떻게 성별분업을 해체해낼 수 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 돌봄 논의를 구체화하였다. 돌본다는 것은 돌봄 상대인 아이에게 집중함으로써 아이가 중심인 관점을 갖고, 돌봄 실천을 하면서 돌봄 책임을 키우고, 돌봄 시간 확보를 위해 일상적으로 시장노동 시간과 돌봄 시간 간의 치열한 경합을 경험하고, 가사와 육아가 통합되는 것이다. 돌보는 남성들은 이러한 일련의 돌봄 과정을 경험하면서 돌봄은 직접 해봐야 아는 것으로, 돌봄이 특정인(여성/엄마)만이 아니라 누구나 할수 있다는 인식을 가짐으로써 돌봄에 대한 기존의 통념을 깰 수 있었다. 그에 반해 돌보지 않는 남성들은 아이에게 집중하지 못하고 자기중심적인 일상을 구성하며 돌봄을 최소화하거나 회피하며 돌봄 통념을 그대로 고수했다. 이러한 두 남성 집단 간의 명시적인 차이는 바로 돌봄 과정에 직접 결합해 실천을 했느냐 여부이다. 돌보는 남성들은 돌봄실천을 통해 아이와 유대 관계를 형성하는데, 이 유대 관계가 돌봄의 동기가 되어 다시돌봄 실천을 자극하는 방식으로 돌봄이 이뤄지고 있었다.

영문 초록

The reason why feminists have emphasized the importance of men’s engagement in childcare is that childcare experience provides the foundation of being aware of the importance of childcare and it leads to deconstruct the gender-based division of work. Since the rhetoric of fathering prevails in Korea recently, therefore it seems it is the right moment to start to discuss what the childcare is, why it is important and how it will achieve the gender equality. This research tries to make the discourse on daycare more concrete by doing comparative analysis between one group of men engaged in childcare and the other group of men trying to minimize their participation. In addition it wants to further discuss what the childcare is and how men’s childcare experience could lead to the gender equality in labor division. Providing the childcare is to focus on a child being cared and get a child-centered perspective, to increase the responsibility of caring through childcare practice. It requires juggling with market labor and care work to secure daily care and to integrate housework and child care. Men participating in childcare were able to realize that the caring for child can be provided by anyone, not only women and mother. It broke the existing conventional social norms on the childcare. On the contrary, men who tried to minimize engagement in childcare showed tendency of less focusing on their children and constructing self-centered daily life to minimize or avoid care. They kept the conventional social norms on the childcare. A clear difference between these two groups of men is whether they had direct experiences in childcare process or not. Men participating in childcare tend to successfully make a close tie with their children and this tie motivates men to keep actively participating in childcare.
