극단 및 중간 응답양식의 종단적 안정성 검증

국문 초록

본 연구는 종단연구 자료의 타당도에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 방법편파 탐색에 관한것으로, 국내 학업성취도 패널자료를 활용하여서 시간에 따른 응답양식의 안정성 정도를 검증하였다. 이를 위하여 해당 구인의 시간-불변적 특성요인과 시간-특수적 상태요인간의 관계를 모형화 할 수 있는 잠재 특성-상태-상황 모형(Latent Trait-State-Occasion Model:TSO)(Cole et al., 2005)을 적용하였다. 구체적으로 서울교육종단연구(SELS)의 초, 중학교패널자료(1~3차년도)를 활용하여서 우리나라 응답자들에게 전형적으로 나타나는 극단(Extreme Response Style: ERS) 및 중간응답양식(Middle Response Style: MRS)의 종단적 안정성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 특정시점의 ERS와 MRS 상태(S) 요인의 분산에는 시불변적인 안정적인 특성(T)과 시변적인 상황(O) 요인의 효과가 공존하고 있었다. 둘째, ERS 및MRS 모두에서 상황 요인(50.9~60.2%)이 특성 요인(39.8~49.1%) 보다 상대적으로 높은 영향력을 보였다. 셋째, 학교급(연령) 및 응답양식 유형에 따른 안정성 정도를 비교해 본 결과, 초등학생 보다는 중학생의 응답양식에서, 그리고 MRS 보다는 ERS에서 특성적인 (trait-like) 성향이 상대적으로 높았다. 넷째, 성별에 따른 응답양식의 특성 차이는 중학생자료에서만 유의하였고, 여학생은 MRS, 남학생은 ERS 경향이 높게 나타났다. 마지막으로본 연구결과의 시사점 및 추후 연구를 위한 제언이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Response style such as extreme response style(ERS) and middle response style(MRS) is a well known source of data contamination in survey research. This research extends the existing literature tolongitudinal research setting by attempting to test stability and change of ERS and MRS over time. Specifically this study used a latent Trait-State-Occasion model(TSO)(Cole, Martin & Steiger, 2005) to evaluate the longitudinal stability of response style across three-waves, three-years for a sample of 4,282 primary and 4,157 middle school students. Results revealed the existence of a time-invariant trait factor and a set of time-varying occasion factors. Also, a stable trait factor accounted for about 40.1~49.1%, 39.8~41.5% of the variance in latent ERS and MRS state factors respectively, whereas occasion factors accounted for about 50.9~59.9%, 58.5~60.2% of the total variance of ERS and MRS state factors. Third, the stability of individual differences in response style tended to increase with age and differed in types of response style. Finally, the effect of gender on ERS and MRS trait was statistically significant only for middle school students. Implications for research and the application of questionnaires in longitudinal research are discussed.
