국문 초록

다원화, 다양화의 시대, 모든 절대의 가치들이 의문에 부쳐지는 시대에 그리스도교의 ‘순교’라는 말은 얼마나 의미 있게 이해될 수 있을까? 교회의 위기와 박해의 시대에 순교 영성은 빛을 발하고, 생명의 위협을 받는 그리스도교 신자들에게 두려움을 상쇄시키는 역할을 했음에 틀림없지만, 외면적 박해와 종교의 자유가 보장된 신앙의 환경 안에서 ‘순교’를 돌이키자는 구호는 자칫 ‘신앙의 근본주의자’로 내몰릴 위험이 다분하다. 본고는 순교의 정확한 개념과 신학을 재평가하고 현대의 상황에 맞게 ‘순교’의 개념을 이해하여, 순교라는 문제를 ‘지금 여기에’(hic et nunc)서 보다 가치 있고 의미있게 이해하려는 데 목적이 있다. ‘순교’ 개념의 영성적 사멸 위기에서 ‘순교’ 개념의 외연을 확장하여 새로운 현대적 이해를 시도한 사람은 바로 교황 요한 바오로 2세이다. 1982년 막시밀리아노 마리아 콜베 신부를 시성하는 과정에서 교황 요한 바오로 2세는 복음의 진정한 가치인 “사랑의 실천, 사랑의 증거”를 순교의 중요한 기준으로 이해하였다. ‘순교’의 정의에 대한 많은 신학적인 논란이 있었으나, 복음의 본질적 가치인 ‘사랑’은 신학 위에 존재한다. 왜냐하면 “하느님은 사랑”(1요한 4,16)이 시기 때문이다. 오늘날 순교는 ‘그리스도에 대한 증언’ ‘사랑의 증언’ ‘벗을 위하여 목숨을 내어놓을 수 있는 용기(자신의 소중한 것을 포기할 수 있는 용기)’로 새롭게 이해되어야 할 것이다. 순교를 ‘피 흘림’이라는 극적인 관점에서 바라보는 것도 중요하지만 더불어 ‘두려움 없는 사랑’(1요한 4,18)으로 이해하는 것이 오늘날 보다 ‘순교’의 개념을 현재화시킬 수 있는 방법이다. 교회가 진정한 소금의 역할을 할 수 있는 ‘포기’와 ‘비움’의 구도자의 모습을 보여 줄 수 있을 때, 세상에서 죽을 수 있을 때 교회의 자기 정체성을 되찾을 수 있을 것이며 의미 있는 ‘순교’의 개념을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. ‘사랑’을 위하여 자신의 생명을 능동적으로 ‘주었던’ 사람들(순교자)과, ‘삶의 의미’를 찾지 못하고 생명을 수동적으로 ‘포기’한 사람(자살자)의 삶에 대한 태도는 너무나도 확연하게 다르다. 순교자들은 ‘초월’을 항상 염두에 두었다. 시간과 공간을 넘어서 있는 ‘하느님 나라’에 대한 동경과 더 높고 깊은 세상에 대한 그리움으로 잠세(暫世)를 넉넉하게 바라볼 수 있었던 것이다. ‘순교’ 위에서는 새로운 가치와 생명이 더욱 무성하게 자라난다. 이러한 순교자들의 순교 정신은 예수 그리스도의 가르침, 수난과 부활을 따라서 교회의 전통을 이루어 낸 신앙 행위로서 현대의 복음화에도 여전히 유효한 복음의 영성으로 제시될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

In an age of pluralism and diversity when any absolute values are questioned, can the Christian word ‘martyrdom’ have any meaning that can be understood truefully today? In the age of crisis and persecution of the church, the spirituality of martyrdom emerged without doubt as a light which served to offset the threat to life which caused fear to Christian believers. However, in an environment where freedom of religion is guaranteed, ‘religious fundamentalists’ can hijack the true meaning of martyrdom. So this study aims at a reappraisal of the theology of martyrdom so that in today’s environment the concept of ‘martyrdom’ might be correctly understood and its value and meaning might be better understood here and now. Seeing the crisis caused by the demise of the concept of martyrdom, it was Pope John Paul II who attempted to delineate a new, broader and modern understanding of ‘martyrdom’. In 1982 during the process for the canonization of Maximilian Maria Kolbe, Pope John Paul II understood that the important criterion for martyrdom was the genuine Gospel value of ‘the practice of love, the witness to love’. There was much theological controversy over the definition of ‘martyrdom’, but ‘love’, the essential Gospel value, exists above theology. For “God is love”[1Jn 4,16]. Nowadays martyrdom will have to be newly understood as a ‘witness to Christ’, a ‘witness to love’ and ‘the courage to lay down one’s life for one’s friend’(the courage to renounce the importance of the self). While martyrdom as seen from the dramatic viewpoint of the ‘shedding of blood’ is important, an understanding of ‘love without fear’[1Jn 4,18] also is a good way of presenting the concept of ‘martyrdom’ these days. When the church in its role as ‘true salt of the earth’ presents the face of a ‘self-renouncing’ and ‘self-emptying’, when it is able to die to the world, then it will be able to find its true nature and discover the meaning of ‘martyrdom’. A martyr always has in mind the thought of ‘transcendence’. This is able to be clearly seen in his longing for the ‘kingdom of God’ beyond this world of space and time, a yearning for a higher and deeper world. ‘One plus one’ is logically two but ‘five plus two’ can add up to five thousand and this transcends any logic. ‘Martyrdom’ makes new values and life grow on it. On the other hand, ‘suicide’ which keeps distance from all values and meaning has only death and nothingness for its blossom. As the Korean Church moves into the third millennium, the ethos and spirituality of her Martyrs give suggestions for a contemporary theology. This new understanding of their martyrdom which is based on church tradition will give rise to a new spiritual movement for today’s church.
