재동경조선YMCA의 토포스와 기독청년의 기독교 담론

국문 초록

재동경조선기독교청년회(이하 재동경YMCA)의 기관지 기독청년은 1910년대 후반 도쿄 유학생들의 에피스테메를 살피기에 귀중한 자료로서 연구의 가치를 지닌다. 기독청년은 이 잡지의 발행기관인 재동경YMCA의 활동과 겹쳐서 독해될 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 기독교와 YMCA 네트워크를 문제의식의 출발점으로 삼아 재동경YMCA과 기독청년에 접근한다. 재동경YMCA 회관은 유학생들의 살롱이자 아고라로서 내면 형성의 장이 되었으며, 2•8 독립선언 은 그러한 공간적 속성과 주체의 욕망이 공명한 사건이라 할 수 있다. 이 과정에서 YMCA 네 트워크는 재동경YMCA가 트랜스내셔널의 교차점으로서 기능할 수 있는 기반이 되었다. 한편, 기독청년의 기독교 담론은 도쿄 유학생들의 인적 교류와 그로 인한 사상적 변화 속에서 분 석할 수 있다. 이들은 자유주의 신학과의 만남을 통해 신앙과 근대적 지식을 양립시킬 수 있 었을 뿐 아니라 조선의 기독교를 상대화하고 비판할 수 있었다. 이러한 영향은 기독청년􎛱의 코스모폴리탄적 지향성과 종교의 사회적 전환이라는 측면에서도 감지된다. 특히, 기독청년은 ‘덕(德)’을 종교라는 맥락 속에 재배치함으로써 덕의 가치를 재발견하는 동시에 실제적 종 교로서의 기독교를 구축한다. 이는 기독교를 현실로 옮겨오려는 노력이자 기독교를 통해 식민지 청년의 담론정치를 전개하려는 시도였다. 이러한 노력은 ‘지상천국’ 논의에서 극대화된다. 자유와 평등에 관한 상상과 직접적으로 연동되어 있는 ‘지상천국’에 대한 상상은 식민통치에 대한 비판적 언설이었으며, 이는 곧 상실된 나라에 대한 감각을 자극하는 담론적 저항이었다. 그러나 기독교의 정치적 전유를 촉발했던 추상성과 개방성은 담론자원으로서 기독교가 지닌 한계이기도 했다.

영문 초록

This paper examines Korean YMCA in Tokyo and Kidok Ch’ŏng-nyŏn, the main publication channel of the organization, to explore young Korean intellectuals’ episteme while studying in Japan. The paper takes the Christianity and the YMCA network as the focal points to analyze the topos of Korean YMCA in Tokyo and the Christian discourse in its magazine. The Center of Korean YMCA in Tokyo, as a salon and an agora for Korean students, made a variety of activities possible. The politics among them was reinforced through this space, and the interaction of the attributes of the space and Korean students led to the 2•8 Declaration. Korean YMCA in Tokyo fulfilled the trans-national role based on YMCA network. The Christian discourse in Kidok Ch’ŏng-nyŏn should be read in the context of Korean students’ staying in Tokyo. During their staying, influenced by liberal theology, they thought faith and modern knowledge could be compatible, furthermore, criticized Christianity in Korea of those days. It is implied in their desire to cosmopolitans and the social reorientation of Christianity. Kidok Ch’ŏng-nyŏn, relocating the ‘virtue’ in the context of religion, appropriated the Christianity in practical and political ways. The imagination of “Heaven on the earth” deeply linked to freedom and equality criticized the Imperialism indirectly. It also stimulated the imagination of nation which disappeared. It was the abstraction and openness that expedited the political appropriation of Christianity; however, it was the limit that Christianity had as a discourse resource at the same time.
