계급 죽음 논쟁에 대한 맑스주의 비판

국문 초록

본 연구는 현실 사회주의의 실패와 몇 차례에 걸친 노동자 계급의 정치세력화 무산이 과연 과학으로서의 맑스주의와 그에 따른 계급 분석에 종언을 가하는 기점이 되는가에 대한 문제의식 하에 1990년대를 정점으로 한 계급 죽음 논쟁(Death of Class Debate)을 비판적으로 고찰하고, 이 논쟁에서 제기된 맑스주의 계급 분석 비판에 대한 반비판을 시도한다. 반비판은 크게 방법론, 이론의 설명력, 그리고 분석적 측면에서 이뤄진다. 방법론 측면에서는 신베버주의 계급 분석가들, 특히 골쏩과 마샬이 라카토스의 과학적 연구프로그램 개념을 왜곡되게 수용하여 맑스주의 계급론을 비판하고 있다는 점과 라카토스의 과학 방법론에 비춰 봐도 맑스주의 계급 분석은 진보하는 연구프로그램에 속한다는 점을 밝힌다. 이론의 설명력 측면에서는 맑스의 생산에 기반한 계급 개념을 경제결정론과 명확하게 구별 짓고, 더 나아가 맑스주의 진영 내에서 대립 관계에 있던 계급에 대한 구조적 접근과 역사적 접근은 실상 맑스의 변증법적 계급 분석의 기초임을 밝힌다. 그리고 분석적 측면에서는 맑스주의 계급 분석이 종국엔 베버주의 계급 분석으로 수렴될 수밖에 없다는 테제를 라이트의 계급론으로 우회하여 기각하고, 그의 착취 중심적 계급 분석 방법이 갖는 문제를 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 맑스주의 계급 분석의 기초를 확인한다. 계급 죽음 논쟁에 대한 이와 같은 메타 이론적 접근은 계급에 대한 경험적 연구가 원활하게 이뤄지기 위한 초석으로 기능하는 동시에, 추후 구체적인 계급 분석 연구를 필요로 한다는 점에서 한계 또한 갖는다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to review critically on the 'Death of Class Debate' that reached a peak during the 1990s, and to attempt anticriticism of the critiques brought up in this debate for Marxism's class analysis. The anticiriticism is done from three aspects: the methodological, explanation ability of theory, and analytical aspect. In the methodological aspect, this study shows that neo-Weberian analysts, especially Goldthorpe & Marshall, accept Lakatos's scientific research program incorrectly and Marxist class analysis even belongs to Lakatos's progressive research program. In the explanation ability of theory aspect, I try to distinguish Marx's class concept based on production from that of economic determinism, and furthermore show that both structural and historical access in antagonistic relationship are actually the root of Marx's dialectical class analysis. Finally, In the analytical aspect, I dismiss the thesis that Marxist class analysis would be converged toward Weberian class analysis through examining Wright's Neo-Marxist analysis method. Although his exploitation-centric class theory can not represent marxist class theory, critical review of his perspective give us a chance to confirm the basis of marxist class analysis. This meta-theoretic access to the 'Death of Class Debate' may be meaningful to carrying out the empirical researches about class, but has limit in the way that concrete class analysis should be needed.
