국문 초록

현대 자본주의의 몰락을 예고하는 전조와도 같은 전 세계적인 경제위기를 당하여 당면한 문제를 해결하려는 G20 정상회의를 서울에서 성공적으로 마친 이 시점에 근대 자본주의의 발전과 관계하여 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤던 칼뱅주의에 대하여 다시 한 번 살펴보며 나름대로 문제 해결의 신앙적인 실마리를 찾아보고자 한다. 베버는 그의 역작 프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의의 정신(1904-1905)에서 프로테스탄트 윤리 특히 칼뱅주의적 윤리가 자본주의의 발전에 큰 공헌을 했다고 주장하였다. 베버에 의하면 “종교란 문화의 경제적 사회적 정신의 근거가 된다”고 한다. 이렇게 주장함으로써 그는 경제적 사고와 행위가 종교 및 기타 이론적 사유의 근거가 된다는 마르크스의 생각을 반대하였다. 그는 베르너 좀바르트가 말한 ‘자본주의 정신이 존재한다’는 가설을 발전시켜 이 특이한 정신의 기원 혹은 원천에 대하여 이것이 칼뱅주의적 종교 윤리의 일종의 부산물로서 나타난 것이라는 가설적 명제를 발표하였다. 그렇다면 근대 자본주의를 가능하게 했다고 여겨졌던 칼뱅주의 정신이 오늘날 우리 시대에 갖는 의미가 무엇일까? 논자로서는 이 시대의 병든 자본주의에 대한 치료책으로서의 의미가 있다고 여긴다. 많은 사람들이 종교와 경제를 분리하여 생각하는 경향이 많다. 하지만 경제생활에 있어서 개인적인 선택이나 의사결정은 도덕적 및 종교적인 가치판단에 의해 영향을 받기 때문에 사실상 종교와 경제는 결코 분리될 수 없다.

영문 초록

Suffering from a global financial crisis like the indications of the collapse of today’s capitalism show, the G20 summit, tries to solve these problems by facing them directly. After the summit successfully took place in Seoul I tried to find the solution of the problem concerning the development of today’s capitalism through a religious point of view, especially through Calvinism and its positive influence on the development. For this research, it was necessary to take a deeper look on the dissertation of Weber who was the first to introduce this thesis in the field of intellectual history. As today’s capitalism which gained its power through Calvinism maximized its influence but denied its Christian roots, all kinds of suppressed human evil desires were exposed and the hideous image of today’s capitalism reached its height. Even if nobody is listening, Christians who belong to the church have to return to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. At this very moment of creating a more advanced and developed society, we as a G20 co-chairman country and most of all churches and Christians, have to take their part in this matter. I have great expectations for every one of us who is participating in this event, that our little efforts can affect not only Korea but even the whole human race through our faithful influence. When believers being appealed on their conscience of faith and non-believers being controlled by law and regulations walk the way of healing and restoration, the human society can have hope again.
