한국 중동학 현황에 관한 연구:

국문 초록

이상과 같이 국내 중동지역학의 역사적 발전과정과 현황을 연구자를 중심으로 하여 살펴보았다. 기존에 국내의 중동지역학 현황에 관한 분석을 시도한 몇편의 연구가 있으나 연구자를 중심으로 분석한 연구는 아직 발간된 바가 없었으므로, 이 연구를 통해 국내 중동학 연구자들의 주요 배출 경로와 연령대별 분포, 연구 활동의 경향을 살펴보는 데 하나의 자료를 갖게 되었을 것이라고 믿는다. 연구대상 6개 학술지에 모두 304명에 달하는 연구자가 중동학 관련 논문을 게재한 것으로 나타났으나 실제 꾸준하게 중동학 관련 학술활동을 펼쳐온 연구자의 수는 연대별로 100여 명에 지나지 않는다. 6개 학술지를 전체적으로 놓고 봤을 때, 연구자들 중 가장 많은 편수의 논문을 게재한 연구자는 황병하 조선대 아랍어과 교수로 56편에 달하였다. 그리고조희선(54편), 김중관(50편), 김종도(49편), 임병필(49편), 김능우(43편) 등의 연구자가 그 뒤를 따랐다. 게재편수 상위 21명의 연구자들이 게재한 논문의 수가 거의 800편에 육박하고 있어, 6개 학술지 전체 2,280편의 논문 중 약 35%가량을 차지하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 한편, 1970년대 이후 출생한 신진 연구자의 학계 진입이 이전 세대에 비해 대폭 축소되고 있다는 점은 우려스럽다. 다행스러운 것은 한국외대의 국제지역대학원을 통해 근래 박사학위를 취득한 신진 연구자들이 10여 명 이상 배출되고 있다는 점이다. 다만 이들이 향후 전문 학술연구자로서 학계에서 활동을 지속해갈지의 여부는 좀 더 지켜봐야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This article is a study on the development of the Middle Eastern Studies, focusing primarily on researchers based in Korea. Although there have been previous studies concerning the status of Middle Eastern Studies, this is the first time such research is being conducted on a researcher-centric basis. This research focuses on publications of researchers from organizations such as the Korean Association of the Middle East Studies (Korean Journal of Middle East Studies), Korean Association of Islamic Studies (Journal of the Korean Association of Islamic Studies), Korean Association of Arabic Language and Literature (Arabic Language and Literature), and academic publications from universities such as the Institute of The Middle East Studies (The Middle East Studies) under Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs (Journal of Middle Eastern Affairs) under Myongji University, and Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Journal of Mediterranean Area Studies) under Busan University of Foreign Studies. The first publication of the six organizations stated above is the first volume of Korean Journal of Middle East Studies in 1980. Afterwards, a total of 304 researchers have published their articles through the 6 journals, although in reality, researchers actively researching the Middle Eastern studies have never surpassed 100 at any given time. The current demand for Middle Eastern Studies are heavily weighted toward energy and commerce while the studies being conducted are on language, literature, and sociological studies which have been previously recognized and criticized. Due to this conflict of interest between the demand and supply, researchers are currently working in fields that have little to no relationship with their academic majors. Therefore, this research is aimed to systematically analyze this phenomenon and to provide future support and guidance for the development of the Middle Eastern Studies.
