영문 초록

This research has been analysed in accordance with the published studies related to the tendency in missiology toward the Islamic world and understanding of Islam. Approximately 200,000 Muslim migrants, including Muslim laborers, are assumed to be staying in Korea. They are only 1 percentage of the minority in total population in Korea, and the Korean Christian attitude to the Muslim migrants is cold and loveless. A number of Protestant groups are hosting anti-Islam seminars, and they are expressing their concerns through various media sources. Their hostility toward Muslim migrants and the expansion of Islamic groups continues to rise. It seems that the possibility of conflict regarding religion and culture can lead to social disintegration. The target of this study is a list of theses regarding Islam missionary work retrieved from the electronic center of the National Assembly Library of Korea. The keywords for searching were Missionary work, Islam, Muslim, Arab, the Middle East, and ‘Hoigyo (The traditional term for Islam in Korea)’. First, ‘Missionary work’ was used as the keyword and then the other keywords ‘Islam’, ‘Muslim’, ‘Arab’, ‘The Middle East’, and ‘Hoigyo’ were used independently in the search results. The overlapping results have been deleted through this process. The search found 156 theses of Korean missionary work by Christians regarding Islam in Korea. The first thesis was a master’s degree from graduate school of education in Ewha Womans University in 1980. However, only 3 academic theses on Islamic theory (mission work) were published as of 1990, and in the 1990s, only 27 were published. Another 126 theses were published throughout the next 15 years. Of these theses, 7 were Doctor of philosophy theses, and the rest Masters theses. The next research would be aimed towards analyzing Christian views on the Islamic faith based on the above mentioned theses.
