유교적 관점에서 본 리더십과 기업가정신 : 두산그룹 창업과정을 중심으로

국문 초록

유교는 오랜 시간 동안 우리나라를 비롯한 동아시아 국가들의 문화와 정신을 형성 하는 데 큰 영향을 끼쳐왔다. 유교윤리는 집단주의와 가족주의를 강조함으로써 현대의 기업경영에는 적합하지 않다는 회의적인 관점이 오랫동안 지배적이었으나, 유교윤리가 한국문화의 기반을 구성하는 요소로써 한국형 경영방식과 리더십 형성의 근간이 되었다는 주장 또한 꾸준히 제기되고 있다. 본 연구는 유교적 윤리가 여전히 유효할 수 있으며, 유교적 사상에 대한 이해가 우리나라의 리더십과 기업가정신의 이해에 바탕이 되어야 함을 제시한다. 특히 구체적으로 우리나라에서 가장 오래된 기업인 두산그룹의 창업과정과 소유경영자들의 리더십과 기업가정신의 발현과정을 유교적 관점에서 살펴본다. 특히 유교적 가치가 지배적이었던 구한말과 광복 후까지 두산그룹의 1대 창업자로 보부상을 하며 기업을 일군 박승직과 그 아들이자 두산그룹을 본격적으로 확장한 박두병의 일생과 그들의 언행을 유교적 관점에서 살펴보고, 유교에서 강조하는 군자다운 품성과 효 사상이 이들의 일생과 회사를 일으키는 과정에서 어떻게 반영되었는지 살펴보았다. 유교윤리 에서 주장하는 바람직한 리더십과 효 사상이 기존의 오해와 달리 유교문화권에서 성공적인 기업운영의 기본 정신으로 활용되어 두산그룹 성장의 밑바탕이 되었음을 사례를 통해 제시한다.

영문 초록

Confucianism, as an elaborate code of social ethics, has been the basis of the cultures and spirits of several East Asian countries, including Korea; and its impact on Koreans’ behavior has been pervasive. Confucianism’s emphases on collectivism, familism, and hierarchical order have historically been regarded to be incompatible with modern ways of management; moreover, it has received criticism for justifying the authoritarian management style. However, many studies have alternatively argued that Confucian values are not incompatible with democracy and modernity; and, as the basis of East Asian culture, have contributed to the economic growth of those countries. We propose that Confucian values are still in effect for businesses because of their focus upon humanity and morality. The concept of leadership and entrepreneurship in Korea is mostly influenced by Confucianism; therefore, the understanding of Korean leadership and entrepreneurship styles must be based on a thorough understanding of Confucianism. This study examined the leadership and entrepreneurship of the first two CEOs of Doosan Corporation, the longest-lived company in Korea, from a Confucian viewpoint. We reviewed the lives of Seungjik Park, founder of Doosan Corporation, and Doobyung Park, the son of Seungjik Park. We summarized how the Parks established the company in the late 19th century and how the company survived through the Japanese colonial period and the independence of Korea. Also, we analyzed the leadership and entrepreneurship of the two leaders on the basis of Confucian philosophy. Based on our analysis, we concluded that the two characters and leadership styles were influenced by the concept of“man of complete virtue (kunja)” and that they behaved in accordance with filial piety, a core ethical code in Confucian culture. In addition, we maintained that acting in alignment with Confucian ethical codes helped the Parks build a large company with an extensive history.
