국문 초록

테러리스트는 일반적으로 폭력과 같은 수단을 토대로 사람들의 복종과 추종을 요구하며, 테러를 당하는 사람들을 공황적 심리상태에 빠지게 한다. 그들의 행위는 자신들의 신념과 성격적 특성 등에 의해 다르게 나타날 수 있다. 최근에는 첨단 과학기술덕분에 테러리스트들이 소수로 활동하여도 가공할만한 피해를 발생시킬 수도 있다. 이로 인하여 테러행위는 한 국가가 상대하기 쉽지 않은 수준으로 진화하고 있는 실정이다. 테러리스트의 심리적 특성에 관한 고찰은 테러행위를 실행하게 되는 동기를 이해하는데 기초가 될 것이다. 본 연구에서는 테러리스트를 미국이나 서방세계에 관점에서 테러행위를 실천하는 개인에 초점을 두었다. 선행연구와 범죄심리학 차원의 프로파일링을 토대로 테러리스트에게 특징적으로 나타나는 심리적 특성인 자기애와 권위주의적 성향을 살펴보았다. 자기애적 성향은 자기몰두적인 경향으로 공감능력이 부족하고 특별대우 요구 등으로 대인관계에서 역기능적인 경우가 많다. 자기애 성향은 극단적인 정서반응의 분노 경험과 표출이 높은 편이며 자기애적 성향의 청소년은 비행행동을 할 가능성이 높다. 권위주의 성향은 내집단 중심성이 높아 편견과 고정관념에 상대적으로 영향을 많이 받을 가능성이 있다. 테러리스트에게서 두드러지게 나타나는 심리적 특성을 기초로 생각해볼 때, 그들이 특정 대상을 외집단으로 규정하여 편견을 가지고 적대감이나 분노를 표출하게 된다면 가공할만한 위협이 될 수 있을 것이다. 타인에 대한 공감능력과 이타심을 배양할 수 있도록 가정, 학교와 사회가 입체적인 노력을 할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This Study was conducted to investigate psychological characteristics of terrorists. Violence by terrorists forces people to obey and follow and make people frightened. Their actions might be expressed in various ways according to their belief and personality, but with advancement of S&T, tremendous damages can be resulted in by terrors of even small groups. Therefore, an individual country is not easy to cope with recent terrors. This study tried to provide a basic understanding on psychological characteristics of terrorists and their motivation of actions. This study was focusing on an individual level rather than a country level, and employed the western world perspective. The terrorists’psychological characteristics were analyzes in terms of narcissistic personality and authoritarian personality by using previous researches. The narcissistic personality tends to be dysfunctional in the interpersonal relationship, and because of the self-centered tendencies, is explained as lacking of empathy and requiring special treatment. It often feels and expresses anger with extreme emotional reactions. The youth with narcissistic personality are likely to be delinquent. Authoritarian personality shows high centrality within the group and tends to get more influenced by prejudice and stereotypes. Considering on the basis of the psychological characteristics apparent from the terrorists, they could be a formidable threat, if they express hostility or anger against the outgroup based on their bias. Therefore it is necessary to make multi-dimensional (home-school-society) efforts to cultivate empathy and altruism for the youth.
