인간생명의 탄생을 보는 두 시선:procreation과 reproduction의 차이

국문 초록

이 글은 생명공학과 인공출산 기술의 발전에 따라 제기된 윤리적 논쟁이 인간생명의 탄생을 바라보는 서로 다른 시선에서 기인할 수 도 있다는 가정에서, 출산을 지칭하는 procreation과 reproduction 용어의 의미 차이를 고찰하였다. 이 과정에서 procreation은 ‘모성’과 관련되며, ‘모성’의 사회적 기능을 인정하는 가치체계에서 사용하나, reproduction은 ‘모성’과 관련이 없으며, 생명체의 ‘생식’기능 과 과정에 대한 돌봄 맥락 에서 사용하는 용례 를 볼 수 있었다. 따라서 우리 사회에서 reproduction의 번역어로서 ‘재생산’을 그 의미 를 명료화 하지 않은채 출산을 지칭하는 용어로 사용할 경우 , 첫째 , 출산은 ‘생식’의미로 만 이해 될 수 있고, 둘째 , 우리사회 의 현행법은 “출산의 사회적 중요성”, “모성호 ”를 인정하고 있으므로, ‘모성’의미를 포괄 할 수 있는 용어를 선정하여 출산을 지칭할 필요가 있다고 판단한다. 이러한 연유에서 ‘재생산’ 용어는 출산의 사 회적 ․ 문화적 의미와 가치를 결여하는 용어이므로, 적절한 용어로 교체하거 나, ‘재생산’용 어를 사용할 경우 는 용어의 의미에 대한 재규정이 필요함을 제안하고자 한다. 필자의 제안 은 용어를 통하여 출산의 의미와 가치를 명료 화하고자 하는 것으로, 이는 법제정보다 선행 되어야 하고, 생명공학과 인공출산기술이 발전함에 따라 제기 될 수 있는 윤리적 쟁점을 판단하는 기준 으로서도 유용할 것이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This study investigated the differences in the meaning of the two terms that means birth: procreation and reproduction, based on the assumption that the bioethical issues raised by the development of bioengineering and assisted reproductive technology may be originated from the different point of views to see the birth of human being. The term, “procreation” used in the value system that recognizes social importance of properties contained in the “maternity” while the term, “reproduction” is used in a biological system that sees the " reproductive " ability and process as value-neutral fact. Therefore, if we use the term, “ j ea-seang-san(재생산)”, which is the translation of reproduction in English, to refer to birth without any clarification of the meaning, giving birth may be understood as j ust the act of “reproduction”. Also, as current law system in K orea recognizes social importance of giving birth and protection of maternity, we need to select a term that comprises the meaning of maternity to indicate birth. In that sense, I suggest that the term “reproduction” should be replaced with a proper word, as it is insufficient to indicate social and culturing meaning and values to indicate birth. O therwise, if we should use the term, the meaning of the term should be redefined. M y suggestion is to clarify the meaning of ‘giving birth’and value through the term we used. It should be done prior to the legal legislation and I believe it will be useful as a criterion to j udge the ethical issues that may be raised according to the development of bioengineering and assisted productive technology.
