국문 초록

<유효공선행록>은 늦어도 18세기 중엽에는 창작되었을 것으로 추정되는 국문장편소설이다. 이 작품은 삼대록계 국문장편소설 중 비교적 이른 시기의 작품으로, 대개의 오락적 소설이 지향하는 흥미담을 삽입하거나 전형적인 성공서사로 끝내지 않았다는 점에서 문제적 작품이라 할 만하다. 이 작품의 주인공이 효우한 군자형 인물이라는 사실은 서술자 발화 및 사건에 의해서도 거듭 확인되고, 또 이 작품의 작가의식이 가문 내지 가문의식과 밀접하다는 것은 분명하다. 문제는 이 작품이 가문을 중시하는 과정에서 공적인 영역과 사적인 영역의 경계가 매우 불분명하게 설정된다는 점이다. 유연을 비롯한 등장인물들은 모두 조정의 대신들인데 그렇다면 유연은 과연 이상적 인물인가, 만약 이상적이라면 무엇에 관하여 이상적인가 하는 지점이다. 본고는 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 작품이 내세우는 효(孝)와 의(義)의 관계에 대해 검토하였다. 그 결과 이 작품은 사건 속에서 불효(不孝)와 불의(不義)를 선택적 관계로 설정함에 따라 효(孝)하려면 불의(不義)할 수밖에 없는 것으로 상황을 설정하고 있다. 효가 의를 넘어서는 이 작품은 조정대신들이 공적 임무 수행과 사적 욕망이 충돌할 경우 별다른 고민 없이 사적 욕망을 선택하는 것으로 그리고 있다. 즉 사적 영역에 속하는 욕망이 공무에 우선하는 일종의 배임이 자연스럽게 받아들여지는 것이다. 그리고 이때의 사적 욕망이란 자기 가족의 안위와 영화이다. 이 같은 선택을 하는 인물은 그 가문의 가장이기도 하다. 이 작품에서는 가장의 선택이 곧 권위가 되는 상황을 긍정하고 있다. 가장이 가문을 위해 필요하다고 판단하는 경우에는 그것이 가족 구성원에 대한 신체적 폭력이든 혹은 대(代)를 이은 장자권의 교체이든 아니면 부당한 처사이든 간에 가족 구성원들은 가장의 말에 순종해야 하는 것으로 그려진다. 이 작품에서 그리는 폭력적이며 독단적인 가장권은 서술자 발화, 부인들의 순종 등으로 미화된다. 이는 조선시대의 가장권과 관련 있는 부분이다. 이 와중에 유부(柳府)는 번영했다. 유연은 유부를 위한 이상적 인물이고, 이때의 이상은 다름 아닌 유부의 안정과 번영이다. 그러나 이 작품은 소위 가문서사가 지향하는 가문을 위한다는 것, 즉 가문의식의 내용성에 대해서는 진지한 문제제기가 필요하다는 사실을 일깨워 준다. <유효공선행록>을 통해 드러난 폭력에 가까운 가장권, 가문이 가장 우선되는 가치이기에 비롯되는 사적 영역과 공적 영역의 경계에 대한 불분명한 태도는 조선시대 가문서사가 지향하는 가문이라는 가치가 지니는 비윤리적 성격을 시사해 준다.

영문 초록

Yuhyogongseonhaengnok(柳孝公善行錄) is a Korean Family Saga, supposedly written at least in the middle of 18th century. This is a problematic work in a sense that it does not insert fantastic elements popular among the people at that time, nor end up with a typical happy ending that includes a successful narrative of a main character. It is pretty clear not only that the main character is represented as a ‘gentleman(君子)’ who practices ‘Hyoje(孝悌: filial piety and fraternal duty)’ throughout the narrator and each episode, but also the authorial consciousness is closely related to the family consciousness. The problem is that, in this work, the borderline of the public and private sphere is very indistinct as it emphasizes the family consciousness. As all of the characters, including Yu Yeon, are presented as courtiers, those questions arise: Is Yu Yeon a really an ideal man? If so, what is ideal about him? To solve this problem, this paper examined the relation between‘Hyo(孝: the filial piety)’ and ‘Yi(義: the righteousness)’. As a result, it is concluded that ‘Hyo’ and ‘Yi’ are in a selectional relationship so that if Yu Yeon chooses ‘Hyo’, he inevitably gives up ‘Yi’. As ‘Hyo’weighs more values than ‘Yi’ in this work, when the character faces with the conflict between the public mission and the private desire, he selects the latter without hesitation. That is, sort of a breach of duty is naturally accepted in this novel, putting more importance on one’s desire belonging to the private sphere than the official duty. Here, the private desire indicates the wealth and prosperity of his family. Moreover, the choice is mainly made by a family head(家長). Therefore, it can be said that in the narrative, it affirms the situation that the family head’s choice is directly linked to the authority. If a family heads defines the situation as critical for the family, all the family members must obey with his orders, regardless of physical assaults to the family member, a swift of birthright among brothers, and any other unfair treatments. It might be reflecting the patriarchal rights in Chosun dynasty. The Yu family (柳府) has prospered after all. Then, Yu Yeon is an ideal man for Yu family, only when ‘ideal’ is related to the family’s wealth and prosperity. Even so, Yuhyogongseonhaengnok is worthy arousing the reader’s attention to the problem of Family Saga’s content. As the family or the ‘violent’ patriarchal right is the supreme value in the narrative, the public mission is easily overwhelmed by the private desire. It shows a kind of immoral nature of the family consciousness, most emphasized in Family Saga.
