영문 초록

This paper has the aim to analyse reasons of the big bang success of Los Del Rio's 'Macarena' and Psy's 'Gangnam Style' through the perspective of cognitive cultural studies. The assumption in this paper is based on the theory of cognitive emotional communication and cultural evolution with mirror neuron and meme theory, because music is the most effective emotional transmission from the singers of 'Macarena' and 'Gangnam Style' to all the global viewers at once in the digital contents era. The performance of singers and back dancers in terms of light colors, body gestures and movements, and facial expressions are all signified as the code with only short lyrics. This paper manifests how the wish fulfillment of Spanish dream and Korean dream can intersect the American Dream through the billboard chart which is considered as the evaluation supervisory system and excessive profit control one. How does the culture code of American Dream is parallelled with the sexual desire of Macarena who dreams a social promotion by going to New York. On the other hand, all the boys in the oceanside wish to get a fantastic sexual interaction with the dancing lady, who can "give happiness to her body because her body is forgiving happiness and nice things to give happiness to her body." Macarena's lyric and performance liberate the self with the passionate wish fulfillment of the dreams to get out of the dominant repressive ideology such as conventional politics and the traditional ethics of older generations in the 90s of the U.S. This paper also insists that 'Gangnam Style' has a creative genius and originality, but universal code of horse dance with the ultimate freedom and wish fulfillment. With the slogan of "dress classy and dance cheesy," 'Gangnam Style' music video has a fun and laugh because of the destructive parody of individual dream under the repressive metropolitan condition of the global economy depression in the U.S. In the urban buildings and horse locked stables, a black suited no muscled chubby guy with black sunglasses, Psy is trotting with horse dances in order to represent the contemporaries lived with "noble on the day but crazy at night." This self-mocking performance has a minimum signification, "Opan Gangnam Style ... Oh! sexy lady," which has the strong sign of culture code in the contemporary urban individuals who are depressed with hard works and economic glooms. This paper concludes that the big bang success of 'Macarena' and 'Gangnam Style' is founded on the theory of mirror neuron and cultural evolution. The former affects emotions sympathizing to liberate out of the economic hardship with the code of self fulfillment of American and Korean Dream and global wishes as well. The latter theorizes the meme theory in order to competitiveness of selfish gene in order to transmit, transform, and evolute the dominant cultural gene like American Dream as the universal dream of human beings.
