웨스터호프는 과거에 존재해 왔던, 동일한 세계관과 가치관이 가정과 마을공동체, 미디어와 오락, 학교 등을 통하여 문화화 되었던, 한 사람이 태어나고 성장하며 참여하게 되는 신앙의 생태 환경이 무너진 역사적, 사회학적인 컨텍스트를 지각하고, 더 이상은 진보주의 교육학자들의 이론을 바탕으로 하는 주일학교 중심의 기독교교육이 적절하지 않다고 주장했다. 그는 무엇보다도 학교교수형 패러다임으로부터 신앙공동체를 통한 문화화 패러다임으로의 전환을 주장한 학자로 유명하다. 본 논문은 그의 생애와 그가 살아가고 사역했던 역사적, 신학적 컨텍스트를 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 그의 문화화 패러다임을 고찰한다. 웨스터호프는 해방신학이 자유주의 신학과 신정통주의 사이에 균형을 보여주고 있다고 생각했고, 후에는 성공회의 신학과 전통에 서게 된다. 이러한 신학적인 차이도 개혁주의 전통의 기독교교육자들 사이에 그가 많이 논의되지 않는 이유 중 하나일 것이다. 그러한 면에서 그의 신학적인 관점에 대한 논의를 포함했다. 오늘날의 적용과 관련해서 웨스터호트의 신앙공동체론은, 테크놀로지의 발전과 다원화가 만들어낸 새로운 기독교 생태환경속에서 젊은이들이 지역교회 신앙공동체에의 참여와 헌신이 신앙발달에 갖는 중요성을 인식하지 못하는 상황 속에서 중요한 시사점이 있다. 그의 신앙공동체론의 핵심이 되는 교회에 대한 묘사는 복음주의 교회의 개인주의적이고 소비주의적 성향을 성찰하게 해주고, 성경신학이 말해주는 하나님의 백성으로서의 교회의 정체성의 이야기에 귀 기울이게 한다. 그의 신앙공동체론은 초대교회의 성장의 원인을 사회학적으로 분석했던 로드니 스탁의 결론, 기독교교리의 탁월성으로 보충되어야 할 필요가 있지만, 교회론적 비전의 회복과, 교회가 정통 신학을 바탕으로 신앙공동체의 조직의 형태, 삶의 모양, 윤리, 사랑을 삶으로 구체화하는 신앙공동체가 되어 기독교세계관과 그 삶의 양식이 내면화될 수 있는 설득력 구조를 젊은이들 제공해 주어야 한다는 필요성을 상기시켜준다.

영문 초록

Westerhoff is known by his assertion of the bankruptcy of the educational ecology in that Sunday school could be successful and need of a paradigm shift from a schooling-instruction paradigm to a community of faithenculturation paradigm. He awakened pastors and Christian educators in his time to see how churches were becoming more like modern institutions, impersonal, bureaucratic and competitive. His ideas have much to offer to Korean church. Korean churches seems to have followed similar trajectories that Westerhoff describes about American churches. This paper explores briefly the biography of Westerhoff and historical context of his time in order to provide a background for understanding his ideas. Mainly his enculturation paradigm and his interest in the church are examined with some theological reflections. Implications are drawn for evangelical churches, particularly concerning the significance of the doctrine of the church in Christian education and formation. A hidden curriculum of individualism and consumerism among evangelical church makes churches considered as voluntary clubs and hinders the contemporary Christians from understanding what it means to be as the people of God corporately. The schooling paradigm and the changing ecology of lives of Christians as a result of technological development and widening networks can weaken the central place of the local church in the spiritual growth of Christians. Yet it is argued that the local church matters and Christian educators should be intentional about an explicit, hidden and null curriculum about the church so that the community of faith can constitute plausible structures for the youth and young adults, witnessing the legitimacy of Christian faith as a worldview and a way of living.
