손자녀 돌봄이 여성노인의 생활만족도에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 맞벌이 자녀를 지원하기 위해 영유아기 손자녀를 돌보는 여성노인의 돌봄현황 및 돌봄의 자발성, 손자녀를 돌보는 일에 대한 여성노인의 주관적 평가에 대해 살펴보고, 손자녀 돌봄이 여성노인의 생활만족도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 파악하는 것이다. 분석자료는 2012년 서울 및 수도권 지역에 거주하는 만60세 이상 여성 중 영유아기 손자녀를 돌보는 여성노인 300명을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 원자료를 활용하였고, 기술통계 분석과 집단차이 분석, 회귀방정식 모형을 통해 손자녀 돌봄의 자발성 및 손자녀 돌봄에 대한 평가가 여성노인의 생활만족도에 미치는 영향을 파악하였다. 연구 결과, 자발적으로 손자녀 돌봄을 선택했다는 응답은 47.7%로 전체 응답자의 절반에 못 미치는 것으로 조사되었으며, 비자발적으로 손자녀를 돌보는 여성노인은 자발적으로 손자녀를 돌보는 여성노인에 비해 양육부담이 높고, 생활만족도가 다소 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 영유아기 손자녀를 돌보는 여성노인들은 손자녀 돌보는 일을 사회적 직업으로 정하고 임금으로 지급할 경우 적절한 임금수준이 월평균 88.33만원이라고 응답하였으며, 이는 여성노인들이 현재 자녀로부터 받는 경제적 보상 수준과는 상당한 차이가 있었다. 마지막으로, 손자녀 돌봄이 여성노인의 생활만족도에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 손자녀 돌봄의 자발성, 돌봄에 대한 긍정적 평가, 양육부담, 손자녀 돌봄에 대한 사회적 지지(어린이집, 유치원 등 외부서비스 이용 여부)가 여성노인의 생활만족도에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 변수로 나타났다. 연구 결과를 종합하면, 우리나라의 여성노인 중 상당수는 노년기가 되어서도 가족 돌봄자 역할을 수행하기 위해 자기희생과 헌신을 요구 받는 것으로 해석할 수 있으며, 비자발적인 손자녀 돌봄과 손자녀 돌봄으로 인한 양육부담은 여성의 생활만족도에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 영유아기 손자녀를 돌볼 때 어린이집, 유치원 등 외부 서비스를 이용하는 것은 여성노인의 생활만족도를 높이는데 도움이 되는 것으로 나타난 바 자녀양육 지원체계의 확대 및 질적 수준 제고를 통해 여성노인의 손자녀 양육부담을 감소시켜야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of grandparenting on grandmothers' life satisfaction. Using data from a 2012 survey (N=300) conducted by the Korean Women's Development Institute, descriptive analysis, including chi-square tests and t-test, was performed together with multiple regression. The results showed that female older adults on average took care of 1.34 grandchildren and spent 47.2 hours per week on the effort. Approximately 48.0% of respondents reported that they were voluntarily taking care of their grandchildren, while the remainder of the respondents reported that they had not intended to take care of grandchildren but do so because their working children asked it of them. Respondents who reported that they were voluntarily taking care of their grandchildren reported lower level of caregiving burden and a higher level of life satisfaction compared to those who were doing so involuntarily. With respect to the economic value of grandparenting, female older adults stated that they should receive at least 880,000 Korean won per month (equivalent to USD 820 as of November 2014) if they were to be paid for this work. Predictors of life satisfaction among female older adults included monthly household income, spontaneity of grandparenting, caregiving burden, and utilization of childcare service (e.g., day care center, kindergarten, etc.). Specifically, level of monthly household income, spontaneity of grandparenting, and utilization of childcare service showed a positive impact on life satisfaction among female older adults who take care of grandchildren, while the perceived level of caregiving burden had a negative impact on life satisfaction. Current work-life balance policies such as parental leave and flexible working arrangement should be expanded so that parents - not grandparents - are able to raise their child(ren).
