한류의 지구적 확산에 대한 종교학적 재평가

국문 초록

국영화는 한류의 지구적 확산을 주도하고 있는 대표적인 문화장르이다. 필자는 이러한 확산이 가능했던 주요 원인을 한류담론이 지닌 종교적 구원론의 메시지에서 찾고자 한다. 일반적으로 종교는 일상의 세계를 단순히 수용하기보다는 이상적인 가치를 제시하고 의미를 제공함으로써 현실을 비판하고 변화시키는 근원적 메시지를 담고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 가정을 지지하는 구체적인 사례로서 봉준호 감독의 영화 <설국열차>(Snowpiercer, 2013)의 내용을 현상학적 관점에서 분석할 것이다. 지금까지 제작된 봉준호 영화에서 여성의 이미지는 수동적인 피해자에서 능동적인 영웅으로 승화되어 왔다. 영화 안에서 제도종교가 명시적으로 언급되고 있지는 않지만 불교와 기독교의 세계관이 창조적으로 결합되어 하이브리드구원론을 구축하고 있다. 영화는 과학시대의 인류가 환경오염으로 인하여 새로운 빙하기를 맞게 된다는 종말의 시대를 배경으로 하고 있다. 마지막 생존자들이 탑승한 열차는 윤회하는 인생처럼 주기적으로 동토로 변한 죽음의 세계를 질주한다. 영화는 앞 칸과 뒤 칸의 인간 사이에 벌어지는 계급적 갈등과 종교의 상반된 기능에 주목한다. 우여곡절 끝에 거룩한 엔진에 도착한 커티스는 득도한 붓다와 시험 받는 예수처럼 욕망과 충동의 유혹을 받는다. 남궁민수는 광인처럼 기존의 세계를 파괴하므로 새로운 시대를 열고 그의 딸 요나는 최후의 생존자가 되어 인류의 새 역사를 맞는다. 영화에서 종교적 인간, 즉 호모 렐리기우스의 진화를 발견한다. 기본적인 욕망에 머물던 단계에서 열차 칸을 통과하면서 보다 고차원적인 단계, 마지막으로는 삶의 근본적인 물음에 직면한다. 한류의 세계적 유행은 다종교에 기초한 독특한 세계관이 구원론의 형태로 반영되었기 때문에 가능한 것이다.

영문 초록

The Korean film, a representative genre of Korean culture, leads the global spread of Korean Wave. The author argues that the redemptive message of Korean Wave is the main source of its global spread. Religion doesn't accept the existing structure without any criticism. Rather it proposes the ideal value and existential meaning to improve the world. This essay examines the contents of Snowspiercer(2013), directed by Joon-ho Bong from the perspective of phenomenology of religion. In his movies, the image of woman changes from inactive victims to active heroines. Though the film doesn't mention any systematic religion clearly, Snowspiercer offers a hybrid soteriology of Buddhism and Christianity to the audience. According to the film, the humanity in the scientific age faces the end of its civilization through the misusage of science and the destruction of the environment. The passengers of the last train, which runs through the world, struggles with one another in order to survive and keep the order within the train. The rail symbolizes the repeated circle of life and death. Religion is used both by the oppressors and by the oppressed. The engine is regarded as the sacred and Wilford, the leader of the front passengers becomes a deity. Curtis, the leader of the back passengers begins the revolt and reaches the engine, where he is exposed to the temptation. Namgung Minsu, a Korean security specialist, succeeds to take off the train with the bomb explosion. Yona, an Asian girl and Tami, an African boy becomes the last survivers in front of the polar bear. In order to explain the global spread of Korean Wave, we should understand its soteriological dimension of various religious traditions in Korean society.
