The Effect of Junk Comments Filtering on Computer-Based Group Idea Generation Performance: An Individual-Level Analysis Using Group Simulation

기업 구성원들간의 업무협력을 극대화 하도록 도와주는 그룹웨어는 기업 생산성 향상의 주요인자로 인식되기 시작했다. 따라서, 그룹웨어 기능들의 한 축을 이루는 컴퓨터 기반 그룹의사결정 또한 경영관리방식에서 패션 이상으로 받아 들여져 왔다. 하지만, 연구자들은 비용수익분석을 바탕으로 그룹웨어 상용화의 선행조건으로 프로세스 손실 개선을 지적한다. 지적된 많은 프로세스 손실들 중 본 연구는 인지자극 방해, 소셜 로핑, 부정적인 방향으로의 생산성 매칭 등을 야기시키는 졍크 의견에 초점을 맞춘다. 아이디어 생산과정에서 필연적으로 발생하는 졍크 의견들을 제재하는 대안으로 졍크 필터링을 선택하고 3 (필터링 타입) × 3 (졍크 비율) 팩토리얼 디자인을 이용한 아홉개의 그룹으로 나누어 필터링과 졍크비율간의 상승적인 상호작용이 일어나는 지의 여부을 실험하였다. 실험결과 (1) 졍크 비율과 필터링 타입이 독립적으로 생산성에 영향을 미치나 기대했던 상승적인 상호작용 효과는 나타나지 않았다. (2) 졍크의 비율을 어떻게 조절 하는 지의 여부가 필터링 타입 보다 더 효과적인 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Companies have recognized a successful utilization of Groupware as a key driver for performance enhancement. Accordingly, computer-based group decision making has been widely adopted in the workplace as more than a management fashion. However, researchers have cautioned the widespread use of Groupware due to critical process losses that could undermine its benefits. Among various process losses identified, this study focuses on the role of junk comments that cause a domino effect from cognitive interference to social loafing to negative productivity matching. Given that recent studies suggest sanctions in the form of junk filtering as a plausible solution to reduce or eliminate junk comments, a real-time filtering mechanism (no filtering vs. weak filtering vs. strong filtering) with varying degrees of junk comments (0% vs. 20% vs. 45%) was incorporated into a computer-based group idea-generation simulator to measure the performance of individuals; comment stimulation was operationalized by presenting controlled comment submissions from simulated group members throughout the idea-generation session. The result showed no interaction effect between junk comments and the filtering mechanisms. To be specific, the junk filtering mechanisms under anonymity did not have an effect on idea generation performance, whereas an adequate proportion of junk comments turned out to be not necessarily a deterrent to idea generation performance. The implications of these findings for future research, as well as the implications for the design of group idea generation procedures are discussed.
