American baseball has been mythologized as an embodiment of the American Dream since its emergence as a "national game" or "national pastime" in the nineteenth century. The privileged title evinces the American ideological belief that baseball concretizes the traditional national values, integrating pastoral ideal, morality, work ethic, individualism, communal cooperation, democracy, and so forth. The historical facts tell us, however, that the mythology of baseball, based on the belief in the seemingly timeless American values, was a historical construct powered and reinforced by capitalist and commercial intents.
To discuss the materialist dimension of the Americans Dream in the national game, the paper examines the process of mythologizing American baseball in association with the industrialization and urbanization of American society that has eventually precipitated the commodification of baseball as competitive business. Given that mythology has been publicly distributed and consumed through fictional methods, the paper also discusses Field of Dreams as a representative example of resuscitating the mythology in the contemporary era. While the film nurtures cultural fantasies of baseball as a force of unifying conflict and healing trauma, its conclusion reaffirms the power of capital as an integral part in the underlying structure of the national mythology. In this way, the paper notes how the mythology of baseball is intertwined with materialistic values, representing traditional mainstream points of view of the capitalist nation.
