국문 초록

이 글은 개발 시기 저학력 도시 이주민이자 임금노동자였던 여성들의 구술생애사를 통해 여성의 근대 경험이 여성에게 남긴 삶의 흔적을 가치변화와 관련하여 탐색하였다. 근대화 과정에서의 여성경험이 주로 노동과 가족연구에 집중되어 온 가운데, 압축적 근대화로 명명되는 한국의 근대성은 가치변화와 관련하여서는 전통과 근대가치의 혼재, 전통질서 극복과정의 생략 등으로 전제되어왔다. 그러나 산업화 시기 여성의 임금노동경험과 가족경험을 통해 여성의 가치변화를 탐구해 본 이 글은, 삶의 과정을 통해 체득한 개인의 역량, 결정, 자율의 경험들이 여성들로 하여금 경제적 독립과 자립의 중요성, 앎의 기회의 소중함, 가부장적 관행의 비합리성 등을 인지하며 이를 자신의 삶에 반영토록 하는데 매우 중요한 영향을 미쳤음을 밝혀내었다. 특히 이 글은 자녀교육이라는 근대가치에 대한 여성들의 전념을 과거 자신들을 주저앉혔던 전통가치에 대한 저항이자 가치 있는 개인으로서의 자존감을 회복시키려는 노력으로 규정하며, 바로 이런 점에서 여성은 밀려들어오는 근대(서구)가치를 무슨 유행처럼 따르던 수동적 존재라기보다는, 그 어느 누구보다 전통에서 근대가치로의 뚜렷한 지향 하에서 행동하는 주체였다는 점을 강조하였다. 전근대에서 근대가치로의 이동이 구체적 삶의 맥락에서 무엇을 기제로, 어떻게 발현되고 실천되었는가를 명확히 하고자 했던 이 글은, 외부의 구조와 조건에 영향 받으면서도, 동시에 자신의 여건과 끊임없이 상호작용하며 변화를 이끌어 왔던 인간 삶의 궤적을 추적하였으며, 이를 통해 미처 채 밝혀지지 않은 여성의 근대 경험이 이러한 논의의 귀중한 자료가 될 수 있음을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the ways in which women's experiences of the modernization process have changed women's lives and perspectives based on the oral history by four women who were rural-urban immigrants and less-educated paid workers. While the previous studies have exclusively focused on the issue of female labor and family relations in the period of industrialization, this paper calls into question the assumptions that women were less central in the process of modernization and less relevant to challenging traditional values and perspectives. By scrutinizing and analyzing rural immigrant women's modern experiences, this article sheds lights on the accomplishments and successes they have achieved over a lifetime. Given the changed circumstance that has allowed women to participate in paid work, it shows that women were able to educate their children and support their families. It goes on to show that those experiences have paved the way for them to feel empowered, encouraged, and motivated. In this vein, this paper argues that women should be considered as active agents who have created their life circumstances despite the obstacles and burdens imposed by society's structures and norms. It also finds out that women have been at the forefront of seeking modern values and ideas. Rather than concluding on the coexistence and contradiction between modern and traditional values, this article suggests that we should reinterpret and reemploy the concept of value changes in ways that reflect women's experiences, memories, and perspectives.
