국문 초록

본 연구는 상징적 상호작용론적 관점에서 젊은 아버지들의 아버지상과 아버지로서 일상생활 실천을 탐색해봄으로써, 현재 한국사회 젊은 아버지들에게 아버지의 의미는 어떠한 것이며, 아버지로서 실천방식이 어떻게 유지되며 동시에 어떻게 변화되고 있는지를 분석하기 위해 수행되었다. 특히 전통적으로 생계부양자로 인식되던 아버지들이 어머니의 몫이던 양육적 역할을 담당하기 시작하였다는 서구의 "새로운 아버지(new fatherhood)" 논의를 한국적 맥락에서 비판적으로 검토하였다. 이 연구를 위해 서울과 수도권의 맞벌이를 하고 있거나 경험이 있는 고학력 30대 아버지 7명의 심층면접을 수행하였다. 사례분석 결과, 우선 아내와의 가사분담, 육아, 자녀교육 관련 의사결정 등에서 적극적인 참여가 이루어지고 있는 사례들이 있기는 하지만, 대부분의 경우 가정친화적이지 않은 노동환경과 모성신화 등의 제약조건들로 인해 도구적 아버지로서의 실천을 지속하고 있었다. 흥미로운 사실은 표면적으로는 모든 연구참여자들이 "친구 같은 아버지"를 추구하고 있지만, 각자의 고유한 생애경험과 현재의 상황에 따라 이에 대한 의미부여와 실천이 다양하게 이루어지고 있다는 것이다. 일부의 사례에서는 자녀와의 친밀성을 자녀의 진로 상담이나 교육방향에의 개입과 동일시하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 결론적으로, 기존 아버지 연구에서의 주요 틀인 전통적-도구적 아버지와 새로운-양육적 아버지의 이분법으로는 현재 나타나고 있는 젊은 아버지들의 아버지상과 아버지로서 실천 방식에 대한 다층성을 심층적으로 파악하기 어렵다는 것을 발견하였다. 현재 나타나고 있는 젊은 아버지들의 "친구 같은 아버지"는 한국의 전통적인 아버지와 구별되는 서구의 "새로운 아버지"라기보다, 오히려 자녀에 대한 부모의 책임과 통제를 핵심으로 하는 한국 고유의 유교적 아버지상의 현재적 발현으로 해석할 여지가 많다.

영문 초록

This research explores the ideals and everyday practices of fatherhood among fathers in their 30s in Korea. Adopting the symbolic interactionist perspective, this study views fatherhood as a social construction which is influenced by the ongoing processes of actions and interactions as well as the broader social and cultural context. In-depth interviews were conducted for this study. The participants include seven fathers, all of whom are college-educated (or above) and have the experience of dual-earner situation. Topic in the interview included biographical descriptions of their lives, focusing on marriage, childbirth, and the child- rearing. They were also asked provide memories about their fathers. All the participants declared a "friend-like-father" as their ideal. Yet their practices as a father were more affected by their situations and life experiences than their ideal. Some participants acknowledged the importance of gender equality, but the practice of an 'instrumental fatherhood' was forced upon them because of the family-unfriendly work environment in Korea. The implications from these results for the studies about fatherhood in Korea are as follows. The western dichotomy of traditional/instrumental vs. new/nurturant fathers may be limited to encompass the diversity of fatherhood practices in Korea. Some fathers may wish and attempt to pass beyond the boundaries of an instrumental fatherhood, yet their new terrain is restricted to child's educational concerns. Thus, despite their ideal to be a different father than their own, their practice may more closely resemble the traditional fathers with Confucian values rather than the 'new fatherhood' in the Western societies. It would be mistaken to assume that their ideal of a 'friend-like-father' is an indication of the evolution 'new fatherhood' in Korea.
