노인학대의 인지도와 노인학대의 실태에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 노인인구의 증가와 급속한 사회변동의 결과 심화될 것으로 예상되는 노인학대에 대한 시민들의 인식도와 노인학대의 실태를 파악하기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌다. 이러한 목적을 위하여 설문지를 이용한 조사방법과 직접면담법이 도입되었으며 본 연구의 조사대상은 대구시내에 거주하는 20세이상의 성인 587명이다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약해 보면 다음과 같다. 응답자들의 58.6%는 노인들이 적절한 존경을 받지 못한다고 인식하고 있는 반면 2,2%만이 존경을 받고있다고 인지하고 있었다. 노인학대의 유형 가운데 방치가 가장 빈번하게 발생하고 있는 것으로 인식하고 있었으며 그 다음으로는 언어적 학대와 경제적 착취의 순으로 인식하고 있었다. 노인학대의 실태를 파악하기 위한 직접면담조사 결과에 따르면 가난하며 혼자 살고 있으며 경제적으로 독립적이 못한 나이 많은 여성들이 노인학대의 주된 피해자에 해당하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 뿐만 아니라 노인학대가 일반적으로 알려진 것보다 훨씬 빈번하게 발생하고 있는 것으로 본 연구결과 밝혀졌다. 그러나 우리 사회에 상당수의 노인들이 노인학대의 위험에 노출되고 있음에도 불구하고 이를 완화하거나 해결하기 위한 행정적인 뒷받침은 거의 전무한 상태이다. 그러므로 이러한 문제에 대한 시민들의 관심을 높이고 원인에 대한 체계적인 규명과 더불어 문제해결을 위한 노력이 적극적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this study is to explore public perceptions of elder mistreatment and its reality in Taegu. For this purpose, two research methods, such as a survey with questionnaire and a face-to-face interview, were introduced. 900 questionnaires were distributed for two weeks in May, 1997, of which 587 were used for the analysis. Face to face interviews were conducted in November of 1997. Findings of this study are as follows: While 58.6% of the respondents perceive that the elderly do not receive proper respect, only 2.2% of them perceive that the elderly receive respect. The respondents reply that neglect is the most serious type of the mistreatment of the elderly and verbal mistreatment follows next. According to the face to face interview, abused persons were more likely to be women, impoverished, living alone, uneducated, physically or mentally frail, and socially, psychologically, and economically dependent on others. Nevertheless, since a supportive formal and informal care system is not yet established in Korea, a large proportion of elderly in Korea are at-risk of being abused. Elder mistreatment is a social problem that affects all of us personally as caring members of society. Abuse and neglect of the elderly are not the major concern or responsibility of one profession, one individual, or one group of our society. Rather, all of those involved must address the issues, questions, and concerns raised everywhere in our society in order to resolve the problem of elder mistreatment.
