This article probes the revelation historical significance of the Holy Spirit as the eschatological transformer of the Ephesian Church in the book of Acts 19:1-7. Varied debates based on conflicting exegesis on this passage have been one of the burning issues in the field of the New Testament pneumatology. Until now, the debate has been an ongoing issue. One of the basic presuppositions of this research is that both the New Testament in general and the book of Acts in particular should be investigated in terms of 'the overlapping phenomena of the two covenants', namely the New Covenant and the Old Covenant. The period of this covenantal overlapping was between Jesus' incarnation and the destruction of Jerusalem Temple, which was the core institute of the Old Covenant. During this overlapping period, some special phenomena took place, due to the transitional dimension in the revelation history of God. One of the phenomena was the special coming of the Holy Spirit to the Ephesian Church, who experienced the baptism in Jesus' name as well as the baptism of John the Baptist.
Even though the 12 Ephesians were converted by the work of the Holy Spirit, they were still in the condition of the covenant people in the Old Testament. Thus, they could not experience the visible and dwelling works of the Holy Spirit, before the Apostle Paul met them. The 12 disciples in Ephesus moved into the fullness of the New Covenant by Paul's preaching of the Gospel and the Holy Spirit in order to proclaim the Word of God. We cannot expect the transitional works of the Spirit which appears in Acts 19:1-7, because the covenantal overlapping period ended with the AD 70 event. Instead, we should hope to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to abolish the overlapping phenomenon which remains within ourselves. In this sense, the Holy Spirit plays the role of the eschatological transformer in our lives too.
