The purpose of this study is to analyze writing activities and writing games in authorized elementary English textbooks for 6th graders. In order to accomplish the purpose, the following research questions were addressed; 1) What kinds of genre are implemented in elementary English textbooks? 2) What types of writing games are presented in elementary English textbooks in terms of group formation, material used, degree of competition and movement, scoring system, and types of writing? Four elementary English textbooks were analyzed in order to answer the first question and writing activities in each textbook were analyzed. Three elementary English textbooks were analyzed to answer the second research question. The results of the study indicated that, firstly, various types of genres were incorporated in the activities, and 'social writing' was the most frequent writing activity, 'study writing' was the second, and 'personal writing' was the third. Second, most of the writing games were for group or individual competition and its scoring system was based on accuracy. The types of writing used in the writing games were controlled writing and guided writing. Based on the results of the study, the development of collaborative writing games is suggested. For more genuine and effective writing practice, the scoring system for collaborative writing games should be based on fluency not on accuracy and also the games should aim for more free writing style practice.
