영문 초록

This study pursues to exploring the impacts that the rapid growth of Hispanics make on the racial order of the American society. Hispanics brought forth substantial confusion in the traditional White-Black racial order of the American society. Hispanics have adapted to the racial order in diverse ways. In 2010 Census, more than half of Hispanics declared themselves to be white, and the rest of them claimed themselves to be "some other race". The Hispanics claiming to be white are brighter in skin tone and higher in socio-economic status than other Hispanics. Hispanics claiming to be "some other race" have raised their voices for being recognized officially their unique racial status separated from White and Black. Four hypotheses were presented on what impact the growth of Hispanics will have on the US racial order. First, the White-Black racial order will collapse while class instead of race will gain social significance. Second, the majority of Hispanics will be incorporated into White, while the White-Black racial order partially remains. Third, Hispanics will be recognized officially their unique racial identity separately from White and Black. Forth, a new racial order having multi-level hierarchy will emerge, which is based on the diverse shades of skin tone. At this moment, which hypothesis will come true in the future is hard to determine. I conjecture that the second and the third hypothesis will have larger possibility in the short term, and that in the long term the social significance of race will decrease, in which process the growth of Hispanics will make considerable contribution.
