In 1989, Hungary was the first country in Eastern Europe to establish diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea. For the first time, international Hungarian scholars’ knowledge of North Korea became available to scholars from South Korea. There are three Hungarian scholars of Korean Studies who have experienced both the North and South Korean way of life. Two of them work as professors in Korean Studies departments and the third is a curator of the Korean division of the Ferenc Hopp museum. This thesis is a report on the third of them, Nagy Ildikó, who is a retired Hungarian woman and scholar of Korean Studies. She was a North Korea’s sole international student. She studied Korean Language courses for two years and graduated from the department of language and literature at Kim Il Sung University in North Korea in 1964. This is a primary report of Nagy Ildikó’s life story. She was born in 1938 and entered elementary school. She then studied with North Korean orphans. She learned Hangul from Korean children at that time. She graduated high school at the age of 19. She was an international student for in North Korea six years. After studying in the North, she worked as a member of the Museum of Arts and Crafts at the Hopp Ferenc Museum of Eastern Asiatic Arts, which is part of the Museum of Applied Arts (Múzeum Iparmüvészeti) in Budapest, Hungary. She worked as an administrator, and later as a director of Korea-related artifacts. She has retired already but still manages records related to Korea. We can gain much from her life experiences and knowledge which would help to fill in the missing link in the chain from 1958 to present day North & South Korea. For example, through her personal network, we can understand the career progression of Hungarian diplomats who seved in North and South Korea, as a result of normalization of relations with Hungary. But another significant factor to analyze through her life is the relationship between South Korea and North Korea, which remained an unknown era until finally revealed through her interview, as a path of bi-directional insight. (Former professor of Korean Studies at ELTE)
