국문 초록

증언은 역사와 기억의 관계가 구성되는 방식에 개입함으로써, 역사를 다시 쓰는 시도이다 이 글은 군위안부 증언 연구가 운동의 전개과정에서 처해왔던 인식론적, 방법론적 아포리아를 검토함으로써, 증언이 역사적 트라우마의 성찰적 극복과 대안적 역사쓰기로 전환될 수 있는 길을 가늠해보고자 한다. 한국정신대문제대책협의회와 정신대 연구소가 출간한 증언집을 대상으로 위안부 운동의 국면에서 제기된 역사인식론적 문제들이 증언 연구에 어떻게 투영되었는지 살펴본다. 1990년대 증언 채록을 축적한 증언 1집부터 3집의 경우, 증언을 문서자료를 보충하는 객관주의적 인식론 속에 위치시키면서도 구술사/여성사가 제기하는 문제들을 인지하고 있었다 이후 2000년 법정 국면을 맞이하여 위안부 증언 연구는 인식론적인 전환을 추구하였다. 증언 4집은 증언을 서발턴 역사쓰기로 자리매김하고 증언채록을 구술적 텍스트 형태로 만듦으로써, 생존자의 주체성을 한 많은 피해자로 국한하는 지배적 시선을 해체하고자 했다 하지만, 이러한 연구의 진전이 증언텍스트 생산과정에서 부딪힌 난점과 증언에 대한 모순적 요구를 말끔히 해소한 것은 아니다. 정치성과 구술성의 양립가능성, “묻기에서 듣기로‘’라는 묘사적 개념이 추구하는 급진적 지식구성론의 난점, 경험 대신 재현이라는 문제들이 야기하는 구술자/생존자와 연구자의 경계성. 그리고 가필하지 않는 방식의 텍스트 구성 효과문제가 그것이다. 이 글은 트라우마의 재현인 증언이 대안적인 역사쓰기로 전환되기 위해서는 역사인식론 차원에서 공감적 청중의 확장이 여전히 요청된다고 제안한다.

영문 초록

Testimony is an attempt to rewrite History by remaking the relation of history and memory. The Korean Comfort Woman has remained the event posing a challenge to the Korean dominant historiography. This paper attempts to consider a way to transform the representation of trauma into reflexive overcoming it and writing alternative history, reviewing epistemological and methodological aporia in comfort women's testimony. I examined how the problematic of historiography was reflected onto studies on testimony texts issued by The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan. During 1990s the status of testimony oscillated in between objectivistic positivism and oral historical epistemology under the Japanese rightists' threat to deny the veracity of it and the Japanese government's conceal of official documents. After the decision of holding "The Women's International War Crimes Tribunal on Japan's Military Sexual Slavery" in 2000 was made, there had been an epistemological conversion in the studies on testimony. "2000 Tribunal testimony team" tried to deconstruct the dominant figure as inert and passive victim, publishing the fourth collection of testimonies based on the principle of producing oral narratives and writing subaltern history. However, the advance Ⅲ the studies did not solve all the contradictory demands and difficulties Ⅲ testimony: compatibility of politicity and orality, feasibility of radical making of knowledge, representational borderline-ness shared by narrater and researcher, and an effect of oral text. I suggest that the extension of empathetic listening public such as the first listener, Yun, Jeong-ok, is still needed in order to get 'working through' the collective trauma and to make the testimony as the fountain of subaltern history.
