플라톤의 논증술

국문 초록

플라톤의 대화편에서는 통상 소크라테스가 질문자로 나오고 무언가에 대해 지식을 가지고 있다고 여겨지는 사람이 응답자로 나오는데, 후기 대화편 <정치가>에서는 다르다. 여기서는 엘레아에서 온 손님이 질문자이며, 젊은 소크라테스가 응답자다. 이러한 구도는 플라톤의 후기 대화편 가운데 방법론 텍스트로 잘 알려진 <소피스트>편이나 <파르메니데스>편의 구도와 유사하다. 정치가란 무엇인가라는 물음을 두고 스무 살 남짓한 소크라테스가 논증에 뛰어난 엘레아 손님과 대화를 나누는 것이다. <정치가>편의 외형은 정치가가 무엇인가를 정의하는 것이지만 그 내용은 그의 기술 즉 정치술이 무엇인가를 추론하는 것으로 채워져 있다. 플라톤은 세 가지 논증의 방법을 제시하고 있는데, 정의의 방법, 신화의 방법, 그리고 예시의 방법이 그것이다. 이렇게 이 대화편은 대부분의 지면이 철학적 방법론 자체에 대한 훈련에 할애 되고 있다. 이 텍스트의 성격에 대한 두 가지 상반되는 해석이 있다. 하나는, <정치가>편은 비록 논리적 측면이 중요하긴 하지만, 후기 변증술 혹은 방법론 일반의 대표적인 텍스트로 알려져 있는 <소피스트>편과는 달리, 정치가에 대한 정의 자체 혹은 정치가에 대한 정의는 이 대화편의 목적 자체라고 하기 보다는 방법론의 훈련을 위한 매개물이라고 보며, 이 대화편의 목적은 결국 논증술(dialektike)의 훈련이라는 해석이다. 우리는 후자를 지지하는 입장에서, 플라톤이 여기서 제시하는 논증 이론 자체에 관심을 가지고 이 대화편을 분석한다.

영문 초록

In the dialogues of Plato, Socrates usually participates as questioner and someone considered to know something comes as respondent. But in the later dialogue the Statesman, it is not the case. Here, around the problematic saying "what is the statesman", an Eleatic visitor armed with logical argumentation questions as like in the Sophist, and the younger Socrates answers as like in the Parmenides. Though the subject of the Statesman is definition of the statesman, the dialogue is filled with many ways of reasoning " politike", the knowledge or art of statesman. Plato presents three methods of argumentation: definition by logos, narration by mythos and illustration by example. There are two conflicting interpretations about the character of this dialogue. The one affirms that although the logical aspect is important in the Statesman, the more important is the definition itself of the statesman or kingly weaver, differently from the Sophist, well known as a text for the later theory of Plato's dialectic. The other opposes it by saying that the definition of the statesman is a medium for the exercise of methodology rather than the object of this dialogue, and that the final goal of the Statesman is the exercise of dialectic. Considering the latter more reasonable, and giving attention to the theory of argumentation itself, I attempt to make an analysis of the dialogue.
