영문 초록

Women’s movement, recognized as one of the new social movement streams, has been very active in Korea, especially after 1987-democratization era. This paper briefly explores the practical significance and theoretical meaning of women’s movement in regard to activity outcomes and relationship to central government last two decades. Although women’s movement has achieved a lot in terms of law enactment, administration setup, many new realm of services for substantive gender equality, it is also true that some main activists of movement were taken into government itself. What always remained unsatisfied was the real autonomy from the government as well as the involvement of everyday citizens in local community. As an agency of independent sector, women’s movement organizations should expand their base into local lives and try to diversify the agenda beyond national issues. Strong networks of citizen interaction and high levels of social cohesion through diverse participation is much needed.
