악의 존재론적 의미에 대한 토마스 아퀴나스의 이론

국문 초록

토마스 아퀴나스는 창조의 목적을 다루고 있는 『대이교도대전』 3권 앞부분에서 악의 존재론적 의미에 대한 체계적 설명을 시도한다. 모든 피조물이 각자의 방식으로 선이라는 목적을 지향한다는 신학적 명제가 보편성을 얻기 위해서는, 악의 존재론적 지위가 반드시 설명되어야 하기 때문이다. 이 논문은 이에 대한 설명이 수행되고 있는 『대이교도대전』 3권 4장-9장의 번역과 더불어 그에 대한 문헌 분석을 목표로 한다. 토마스의 주장은 악이 의도를 벗어나 발생하며 어떠한 본질이나 본성으로 존재하지 않는다는 것으로 요약된다. 자연적 의도이든, 인간적 의도이든 악 그 자체를 지향하는 것이 불가능한 까닭은, 결여로서의 악이 적극적 실재로서의 본성에 우유적(偶有的)으로 수반되는 현상에 불과하기 때문이다. 토마스는 악을 결여로 규정하는 전통적 이론을 충실히 계승하되, ‘어떤 것의 악’, ‘단적인 악’과 같은 개념적 구별을 고안해내고 그에 근거하여 다양한 반론을 해결함으로써 악론을 스콜라철학의 체계 안에서 정교하게 한다. 뿐만 아니라, 행위의 악이 지닌 특수성을 정확히 분석함으로써 존재론적 악과 도덕적 악의 관계를 이해할 수 있는 새로운 지평을 개척한다.

영문 초록

In the early chapters of the Book Three of Summa contra gentiles, which deal with the goal of creation, Thomas Aquinas attempts a systematic explanation of the ontological meaning of evil. He does so because it is necessary to clarify the ontological status of evil if a theological thesis that all created beings, in their own ways, intend the good as goal can be universally valid. While offering a translation of the chapters 4-9 of the Book Three of Summa contra gentiles, where Aquinas deals with the problem of evil, this paper aims at an analysis of the text to arrive at a better understanding of what he does philosophically. Thomas’ argument is that evil occurs ‘praeter intentionem’ and does not exist as an essence or nature. The reason why it is impossible to intend evil itself, whether it be intended by nature or the human agent, is that evil as a privation is nothing other than a mere accident of the positive reality of nature. While inheriting faithfully a traditional theory defining evil as privation, Aquinas refines the theory of evil within his system of Scholastic philosophy by offering solutions to various problems raised in objections based upon his conceptual distinction between ‘evil of something’ and ‘evil simply.’ Furthermore, he opens up a new horizon for understanding the relationship between ontological evil and moral evil by analyzing precisely the distinctiveness of evil in human action.
